Dark web is commonly known as the epicenter of illegal online activities,it is a vast secret cyber underworld where people buy illegal stuff like drugs,weapons,horrific videos and anything that you can imagine that too by being untraceable with consequences that can be deadly.
Dark web is a part of Deep web which makes up 90% of the entire web. Through our internet searches in our daily life we only see tip of the ice berg. People may also be familiar with Silk Road or its history but Dark web is something much bigger than it. Lets take a look into Dark web and also Deep web.
Basic stuff for starters
Basically the web can be categorized into three parts. They are surface web,Deep web and Dark web.
- Surface web : Here everything is pretty much open and available. Basically everything can be found through Google search.
- Deep web : This is the part of the internet that is hidden from the conventional search engines like Google. It contains some websites which doesn't provide much of their information so they are unindexed and it contains the information like your medical records or private data of some corporations.
- Dark web : This web can only be accessed through some special Browsers where you use masked IP addresses to hide your identity.
How did it all started?
In the year of 1969 a couple of university students sent the world's first computer's to compete a message,it was sent on ARPANET it is an early ancestor to internet. The concept of connecting the computers together was a radical idea at that time and it was the progression to the modern internet. Since ever there has been the internet the people started using it for illegal online activities. In fact the first ever ecommerce transaction was a drug deal in 1970,it was done between two students at MIT and stanford. There were many illegal activities started since then as people used the web to escape the eyes of the authorities or everyone's eyes that matter.
However the things got interesting in mid 1990's,a technology called TOR was created and it stands for "The Onion Router" and its a browser which allows users to exchange the information anonymously online. The browsers like TOR are the backbone of the dark web. The browsers like TOR manages to hide the identity of the user by bouncing the connection by three different servers around the world adding an encrypted layer the each time it bounces. It is assumed that TOR was invented by a group of anti-establishment coders and criminals trying to evade government control,looking at the illegal activities on the dark web it makes sense. However quite paradoxically TOR was invented by the US Naval Research Laboratory to allow intelligence personal to transfer information securely. A Department of Defense called DARPA further developed TOR and made it available to the public in 2002. Till this day TOR is still funded in part by the US government. Why would they allow to access TOR for general public? Well the idea was to make it difficult for anyone to decipher which information on the dark web was created by the intelligence officers. It is important to know that the Dark web would still exist without TOR simply because it is only one of the Dark web browsers to which there are many.
What are the stuff that one buys on Dark web?
We had already heard about some of the major stuff that has being bought by many people over the dark web and they are drugs and weaponry. It is said that if you have explored deep enough you'd find any type of assault riffles to machine guns. Also there are things like fake passports,documents,certificates,college degrees made and sold by some professional criminals. Also there are pirated tapes and paid accounts that are sold for cheaper price and the video tapes can be of movies but also some of terrifying footage of animal and human abuse which is really disturbing. Most of the transactions were made using the bitcoins which were safe and secure to do illegally.

There are alot of scams that goes on the dark web. People kept falling for an elaborate scam to hire hitmen. A website claim to offer some of the toughest Albanian Hitmen services but in reality it was two eastern European men tricking people to handing over their money to pay for hit jobs that actually didn't happen and the fraudsters gave some reasons to why the killing didn't happen and after a gap that they filled their bags they made it look like the website being to shut down,this was an effort to make it look legitimate.
Why do you need to know about this?
Many people didn't have an idea what the dark web was for. And some of them thought it was a joke and started clicking of random stuff as they found it interesting exploring the dark web as they were doing it without hiding their identity they started getting strange phone calls threatening them;they even got recorded and have been streamed live on some dark website as their webcams were being hacked by the people of dark web. So the dark web isn't a good place to surf and people really need to know what they are getting into before accessing it. Getting on some sites by clicking on the links you see there may even be a criminal offense. To make things clear it's definitely recommended that you dont mess with the dark web.
