Why do celebrities need to be role models?
We adore them. We love them. We idolize them. We find them cool, confident, and perfect. When these celebs appear on television and advertise any brand or product, we start relating to that product too. They can stand for a cause and get huge support. This is their power. They can convince the masses. With the huge fan following and power comes great responsibility.
Who are celebrities?
These are those national or international personalities who have a huge fan following. They can belong to any field sports, Cinema, Television, etc. They are well-known faces. They earn that credibility that they are simply adored by the masses. If they are actors or actresses who look perfect at all times, then people want to know what are their hobbies and their fitness mantra. They want to see how these stars dress at parties, at night, at the airport. Where do they go to relax or spend their vacations? People want to know about their personal life as to who these celebs are dating or planning to marry. In short, Youth starts idolizing and following them. Everyone looks forward to their upcoming movies or songs.
Why do celebs need to be Socially responsible?
Since they are the role models for millions, their conduct, lifestyle, behavior, everything is under the big lens all the time. People like to emulate their role models. Whatever they do is considered cool by the Youth. If they stand for a cause, people start supporting them. Since they have the power to affect the masses, they need to be socially responsible. Needless to say that few stars have proved time and again that they are socially responsible like Sonu Sood and Akshay Kumar.
Their actions need to be legitimate. They cannot just do something that is illegal and still be considered cool. They cannot go about driving rashly, abusing someone, smoking, and drinking in public and take pride in being anti-national. When drugs are illegal and a criminal offense in India, then these Bollywood stars need to abide by it, or else they should be legally treated just like any other common person.
Large Companies pay huge money to these celebrities to associate their brand or product with them. If celebrities are sued for any reason, then these brands do not like to continue with their association. This is an indication that these companies do not want their brand to be impacted because of their negative personalities, behavior, or conduct.
Why do Bollywood stars need to be role models in India?
In a country like India, where people blindly love and fellow Bollywood actors and worship them, it is not easy to escape from the onus of being socially responsible. In India, people have built many temples for their favorite stars like Rajnikant, Amitabh Bachchan, Karunanidhi, Jayalalitha, Khushboo Sundar, M.G Ramachandran, Nandamuri Taraka Ramarao, Nagma, etc.
When their stature is such that people build temples for them, then these stars need to maintain the dignity of the love and respect they receive. They are accountable to the masses, especially Youth, that emulates them.
The current scenario has raised a big question that is "Whether these Bollywood actors, stars, should actually be considered role models at all"?
In a nutshell, Youth at all times has been impacted with their lavish lifestyle, perfect appearance, so it is very difficult to stop them from imitating their favorite stars or sportsperson. In the end, it is important to highlight that everyone needs to be socially responsible, including celebrities.
