What can tea really do for your health? The truths and myths disclosed.

Many detoxifying tea makers tout the incredible weight –loss and awesome antioxidant cleansing power of their products. But do they work and are they safe enough to use? So before you run to your local health food store, it is essential to consider the truth behind three myths about detox teas.

Myth No. 1: Detox teas are healthier than green or black drinks.

The fact: Even though there is some conflicting research, particularly detoxifying tea products likely do not offer any more true health than plain green tea or black tea, says researchers.

Green and Black teas are both made from a shrub called Camellia sinensis, but for black tea, the leaves oxidize before they are dried.

To produce green tea, tea makers stop the oxidation process, so the leaves retain their color.“Both green and black teas offer many health benefits, say, researchers. “However, green tea   contains more phytonutrient and antioxidant content than black tea.”

On the other hand, tea products contain other ingredients in addition to black or green tea leaves and claim to help the body’s natural detoxification processes.

Many makers of detox tea target those who want to lose weight quickly, so the products contain ingredients that are diuretics (such as nettle leaf or dandelion leaf), or laxatives (such as Senna leaf).

But this does not facilitate increased fat burning; just temporary decreased weight due to loss of body waste and water weight.

Myth No.2: Detox tea can help you lose weight.

The facts: Marketers of detoxifying tea attack those who want to lose weight or inches more quickly, but these products lead to short-term and non-sustainable weight loss.

Here are the best ways to boost your body’s natural detox capabilities:

- Eat plenty of fiber (at least 25-35 grams per day) to support regulate bowel movement.

- Drink plenty of liquid (at least 64-80 ounces per day).

- Include at least five or nine a handful of fruits and vegetables each day in your diet, especially cruciferous veggies (such as broccoli, bok choy, and cabbage), and distinctly colored fruits (such as berries and also green leafy vegetables).

- Exercise regularly (since the body flushes out toxins via sweat and as well as through urine and bowel movement).

Myth No. 3: Detox teas can cleanse your body

The question remains the same: Do detox teas do what they say they will do-flush toxin out of your system.

The fact: Research does not have any evidence if detox teas can help flush out toxins out of the body more so than green tea alone. Your body organs like liver, kidneys, and GI tract, as well as the immune system, comprises your body’s natural detoxification center; research fails to prove any added benefits from detox teas.

Therefore, as an alternative, researchers recommend drinking green tea over black tea and detox tea.

As many researchers say, “green tea is typically lower in caffeine, but rather higher in antioxidants, which (antioxidants) can help protect the cell from free radical damage, helping the body continue to function normally. This includes defending the organs and the immune system that is in charge of detoxification.”

The Bottom-line truth about tea

Like most things that seem too good to be true, especially detoxing tea products do not have miracle weight loss properties. And perhaps you can count on your body to detoxify naturally.

However, green tea is a healthy addition to your diet. And drinking black tea likely does not hurt either. So enjoy your tea as much as you can
