Even billions of movies made in India, but to collect the best ten was as hard as you can imagine. We consider the thicker the story is, the better the movie. So Every title in this list except honorable mentions are those movies that are not just centered in one conflict, all of them have a complete story.

 

10) Salaam Bombay

 

Released in the year of 1988, Mira Nair's Salaam Bombay can't get old. A movie that reflects a lot of reality through a profoundly moving story, Salaam Bombay, is undoubtedly one of the best Indian films of all time. The movie centers on the development of a little boy named Krishna, who went to Bombay just to collect 500 rupees so he could repay his brother's bicycle that got broken by him. The film chronicles the day to day life of children living in the slums of India's biggest city Bombay. With such a great storyline, the one Oscar nomination for the movie was well deserved Also awarded in the Cannes film festival for best cinematography Salaam Bombay is the movie to feel, understand, cry and enjoy.

 

 9) Sholay

 

Sholay topped the British Film Institute's "Top 10 Indian Films" of all time poll of 2002 though we put it on our no. Nine, but that doesn't lessen any chance how good the movie was. Sholay was so popular that it was re-released on theatre in 2014 in 3D format. Ramesh Sippy's Sholay was a crime drama that centers the story of two characters named Veeru and Jai, who got a duty to catch the ruthless dacoit Gabbar Singh. Making its genre, Sholay was a long-running drama that considered as the best Bollywood movie in so many areas and polls. Not just for its action sequences but also for its beautiful cinematography, memorable dialogues, and unique performances, Sholay is still one of the best Indian movies.

 

 8) Nayakan

 

If translated in English, the title is The Hero. This 1987 Tamil feature was recognized globally in the year of release and later considered as one of the greatest Indian movies. The movie is loosely based on the real-life Bombay underworld don Varadarajan Mudaliar, and sympathetically depicts the struggle of South Indians living in Bombay. It was released in the time of Diwali and was highly critically acclaimed. As N.Krishnaswamy of The Indian Express said, "It's an artistically made film that could make money as well. As about the recognitions, Nayakan was submitted for one Oscar and won two national awards for best cinematography and Best Art Direction. With these great recognitions we AIOS also considers it one of the best Indian movies of all time.

 

 7) 3 Idiots

 

 '3 Idiots' is still the most loved and most talked about movie ever made in India. And the reason is simply for its incredibly memorable storyline. Rajkumar Hirani's 3 Idiots was released in the year of 2009 and instantly loved by the teenage audience as it's by far the most realistic depiction of college life. Rancho, Farhan, and Raju are the three friends on the number 1 engineering college of India. Rancho is the most unique from them to change the lives of the other two in his funny way. In this fantastic journey, there are moments of heartbreaks, emotions, and laughter. With excellent screenplay and cinematography, 3 Idiots can be the same memorable even a long time later.

 

 

 

6) Lagaan

 

 This long-running sports drama has thrills, entertainment, and lesson. A genuine portrayal of the British Ruled time Lagaan was the movie that earned a lot of recognition that no other Hindi movie did before. It's the story of the people of a small village in Victorian India stake their future on a game of cricket against the ruthless British rulers. They engaged in the game of cricket because it could help them lose the tax for the next three years. Even with unknown to the game of cricket, they didn't lose hope for a moment. Directed by Asutosh Gowariker's Lagaan is an intense film that was nominated for one Oscar, its own seven national film award, 8 Film fare award, nine-screen awards, and 10 IIFA awards.

 

 5) Queen

 

Vikash Bahl's Queen was a surprise hit in 2014, as well as on our list. This is the movie that was both highly critically acclaimed and loved by the audience. The best thing about the film is that in all the way it was a surprise. No other Indian movie was made just like this. Queen is the story of 24-year-old Rani whose marriage got called off just before a day of the wedding. Then she decided to go to her honeymoon alone that changed her life as an incredible way of self-discovery. The mesmerizing performance from Kangana Ranaut made her win the best actress national award. Also, the movie got one national recognition for the best feature film in Hindi. And with a high critical appreciation, Queen was one of the best movies of Bollywood as well as India.

 

 4) Gangs of Wasseypur –

 

Viacom 18 Motion Pictures A Bollywood masterpiece Gangs of Wasseypur is one of the most fantastic gangster drama from all over Asia. With a great cast and outstanding performances, especially from Nawazuddin Siddiqui Gangs of Wasseypur, took the place of our number 4. The story centers the clash between Sultan and Shahid Khan from Wasseypur and ignites a deadly blood feud spanning three generations. All the scenes are full of entertainment and action in this movie. And one can't just miss this one. They are divided into two parts with a long-running time. The film is detailed with its sequences and drama. Above all, one of the best performances from Nawazuddin Siddiqui made him won the best actor of the Year national award.

 

 3) Mayaa Baazar

 

 He is considered the most excellent Indian movie of all time, with more than 16 thousand votes in an online poll conducted by IBN Live in 2013. Adaption from Mahavarat, the story is about Balarama, who promised Subhadra to get his daughter married to his son. When he loses his kingdom to Kaurava's, Balarama has no choice but to break his promise. A unique comedy-drama Maya Bazaar is made artistically and way too critically acclaimed, and both loved hugely by the audience. Released in the year of 1957, this Telegu language film was instantly loved by the audience and also got a lot of recognition internationally. Amazingly directed and beautifully performed, Mayaa Bazaar is a perfect definition of comedy, and it's undoubtedly one of the best Indian movies of all time.

 

 2) The Apu Trilogy

 

 With three movies Pather Panchali, Aparajito and Apur Sansar The Apu Trilogy was one of the greatest from Satyajit Roy. A beautiful slice of life drama The Apu Trilogy amazingly reflected an unspoken beauty under the screen. The debut film from Satyajit Ray Pather Panchali was released in the year of 1955 and awarded in the Cannes film festival. Also, it was submitted for oscar and gone for the BAFTA. With even a lot more recognition, this amazing trilogy centers the life of Apu from his very childhood to mid-life. It's not only based on his life but also his family. With beautiful cinematography, writing, and performance, the movie is a film of life. So before we show the best Indian film of all time here are some honorable mentions based on personal opinion:

 

1) Drishyam

 

Drishyam was a thriller drama made by Jeetu Joseph and released in the year of 2013. Drishyam is about a man who embarked on a journey to save his family from an accidental crime done by them. This is the journey of this man with his wife and two daughters. This extreme film is an ideal example of a thriller drama and took the place of the Best Indian movie of all time in our video. Even the remake made by Nishikant Kamat got more popular than the original. It's not just a thriller but also a story of love, respect, and duty of the man of one family. With such great storytelling from Jeethu Joseph and outstanding performances by the actors, this movie is gripping, intense, suspenseful, and realistic that can blow the mind of the audience and also provoke their thoughts. Even though the film didn't get much international recognition, but this is undoubtedly one of the unique pieces of film ever made in India.
