Sufferers with diabetes have an increased risk of kidney disease. Not only the kidney, but diabetes also causes many diseases, which can prove to be fatal.

Former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj died of a heart attack late on Tuesday. Sushma had kidney and diabetes problems. He also underwent a kidney transplant in 2016.

Since then, he had a health problem. He did not contest the Lok Sabha elections in 2019 due to his health. Let us know that the risk of kidney disease increases in patients with diabetes. Not only the kidney, but diabetes also causes many diseases, which can prove to be fatal.

Increased blood sugar has a terrible effect on the body. It is dangerous for many organs, including the heart, kidney, eye. Experts say that about 40 percent of patients who have diabetes for a long time have diabetic nephropathy. It can take severe forms if not detected in time.

What is nephropathy?

Nephropathy is a severe kidney disease that occurs later in 40 percent of diabetes patients. Patients with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes are at risk of this nephropathy. Diabetic nephropathy reduces kidney function. Diabetes affects the blood vessels of the kidney, and the organ does not function properly. In such a situation, the kidneys are not able to properly filter the body's harmful substances. In such a case, it also increases the risk of many other diseases. Many times there is a transplant.

How to avoid

Increased sugar level hurts the kidney. It becomes even more dangerous because there is no pain initially in kidney disease. In such a situation, this disease is often caught in the advanced stage itself. Therefore, patients with diabetes should continue to undergo kidney tests. If detected on time, nephropathy can be avoided, or it can be prevented from taking severe forms.

Also a risk of heart disease

Patients with diabetes are at higher risk of heart diseases. Especially if BP and cholesterol are also increased, then the risk of heart stroke is increased. Patients with diabetes need to have their BP checked at least every six months. If you have high BP and take its medicine, then you should keep getting BP checked from time to time.

- Keep checking hbA1c for three to three months for sugar. Try to bring it to the limit with the advice of a doctor and dietician.

Periodically check for cholesterol.
