How to maintain the electric scooter or electric bicycle during quarantine: tips and good practices

Since the alarm decreed and quarantine began, electric bikes and scooters have relegated to being stored at home. It cannot be exited, so there are no options to use them. But that does not mean that we have to completely forget about these devices, rather the opposite.

Since it is still necessary to carry out proper maintenance so that when all these ends, they continue to perform as always.

Therefore, in this text, we are going to review some tips and proper maintenance practices for scooters and electric bicycles. They are straightforward actions and, except for some points, in particular, they can be carried out with materials to walk around the house.

Check that everything works well

To detect if there is a problem, it is not necessary to take the devices outside, but you can do it from home. For example, you can test that the scooter or bicycle starts, allows you to change modes, and turn on the lights with the push of a button. This will ensure that at least the essential functions remain operational.

To check the engine, Cecotec recommends keeping the drive wheel in the air and accelerating. You can do it by putting the scooter/bike on a chair; it doesn't have to be on the ground. If the device requires you to push yourself for initial acceleration, you can do it manually by turning the wheel by hand. Take advantage of the moment and check the brakes step by step.

Finally, it is also worth checking that all the mechanisms close and open well and are not loose. If so, the manufacturer may have added the necessary screwdrivers to be able to tighten them by ourselves.

Keep it charged, but not quite

One of the differentiating elements of electric scooters and electric bicycles from their conventional counterparts is the motor. This is powered by a battery that we can not forget because if we do not care, we run the risk that it will not turn on again.

In short, it is crucial not to store the scooter with the battery fully discharged, under any circumstances. This applies to bikes, tablets, smartwatches, and other battery-powered devices. It is recommended to keep the battery at a maximum level of 80% and not allow it to discharge below 20% since, in this way, we will extend its useful life.

This is the point to keep in mind for quarantine. It would be rare for the brakes to loosen or the tires to deflate in a month, and in the worst-case scenario, both can be fixed. However, if the battery degrades, the thing changes, because it would have to be replaced completely and, in the worst case, buy a new device. We will also review all of these situations just in case.

Don't let the dust build-up

Wherever you have the vehicle, it will surely accumulate dust (unless you live in a sealed chamber, which is unlikely). It is recommended to remove it not only for aesthetic reasons, but because dust and dirt can reach the electrical circuits and cause some failure.

The easiest option is to use a cloth dampened with water and a little neutral soap. Not much, because you can damage the paint. Run the rag through all corners of the device and dust off. Don't worry about digital components like display; you can clean them too. Remember: we are using a damp cloth, not a wet cloth, they are different things. To dry it, use another dry cloth, do not leave it in the sun, because it is not advisable to expose these vehicles to high temperatures.

What under no circumstances do we have to do is hit it with a hose or a pressure jet. On conventional bicycles and scooters, it is feasible, but on an electric scooter or bicycle, it is not. They cannot be submerged in water, of course.

Take care of the bicycle chain

If you have oil to hand, it is recommended to apply a little bit on the bicycle chain. But first of all, it is a good idea to clean it and for this nothing better than a degreaser. When you have applied it to the entire chain, wipe the chain with a dry cloth and move the pedals several times until you see that it is as clean as possible.

Once this is done, apply lubricant to the central area of the chain, just where the link joints are. A single droplet is enough. Move the chain to apply the product to all the links and, when you have finished, take another dry cloth and repeat the previous process to eliminate the excess product.

Issue? If you do not have lubricant and degreaser at home, you will not be able to go out and buy it, so you may have to leave this step for when the quarantine ends and you can go buy the necessary products.
