How Electric Vehicles Impact India?

1. Current Scenario of Developing Nations

We have been listening for many years that 'Electric cars are the future and there is need of going electric for the betterment of the world'.

There are obvious reasons behind these statements as electric vehicles are very nature friendly as compare to the conventional petrol and diesel vehicles.

But here a question arises that if today anyone wants a new car then he/she will really give a thought for the option of an electric car? (especially in a developing county like India). The answer is a big 'NO'.

2. Causes of Non-Popularity of Electric Vehicles

In developing countries electric cars have not much popularity among its people. There are many reasons for this kind of scenario and the most common ones are high prices of these vehicles due to high import duties and taxes, non-availability of charging stations, etc.

Like any other developing nation, people in India have pre installed mindset that the electric vehicles are not reliable as compare to the conventional petroleum vehicles.

Indians always have some doubts in their minds that battery life would not be good enough and electric cars must have issues with continuous power output. All this happening because of insufficient marketing of electric vehicles in India.

3. Need of The Hour

There is a need of sowing a seed of trust for electric vehicles in the minds of people and do appropriate, positive and sufficient marketing of electric vehicles in India, not only for personal vehicles but also for public transport vehicles.

Governments of many nations are making some policies to inculcate the feeling of trust for electric vehicles in their respective countries.

On its side what has been done by government of India? The answer is government of India is also launching various schemes, one of them is FAME II (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles).

In this scheme government of India provides various tax benefits to the customer of electric vehicle. Also Indian government is inviting leading electric vehicle manufacturers in India, not only for sales but for the manufacturing of electric vehicles and its various components.

4. Entry of Tesla In India

In its path the first milestone has been achieved. Tesla (American electric automobile leader) has entered India. It will provide a massive boost to make in India initiative also and helps India to become a market leader in automobile sector.

If we see the future plans of Elon Musk (CEO of Tesla Motors), then we can understand that why he chose India (Bengaluru, Karnataka) for establishing Tesla's next manufacturing plant.

Actually Elon Musk has promised to the investors of Tesla that Tesla will produce and sell 20 million cars per year by the year 2030. This is a huge target and it is very obvious that for achieving this huge goal Telsa had to come in India.

So in near future there is a very good possibility that we can see made in India electric cars running on the roads of European countries, and other developed nations like Australia, New Zealand, etc.

Competition in Indian Market

Also there are some Indian automobile companies which will compete with Tesla in India. The most popular one is TATA motors' TATA Nexon EV'

6. India is Lacking Lithium

Unfortunately India does not have very large reserves of lithium in its land, but undoubtedly India has excellent engineering abilities and it has full capability of refining the lithium and make long life and high power lithium ion batteries.

Steps taken by Indian Government

Infact Indian government is going to setup India's first lithium refinery in the state of Gujarat.

All India need to do is import lithium from lithium rich countries like Chile, Bolivia and Argentina (sometimes called as lithium triangle countries) or may be from USA and Australia. And rest will be done in India itself.
