Millets are known as the Traditional food of India, and these are the small-seeded grasses grown all over the world, especially in areas of Asia and African regions. There are about 6,000 varieties of millet throughout the world; the staple food of our ancient India was Millets, not Rice. It is not only for human consumption but also for birds and livestock. It has multiple advantages over other crops in drought and pest resistance. Millet is rich in nutrients and plant compounds.

 

TYPES OF MILLETS

The Millets are categorized into two types- Major and minor millets.

Major millets include:

  • pearl
  • foxtail
  • white
  • Ragi

Minor millets include:

  • Kodo
  • barnyard
  • little
  • Guinea
  • brown top
  • fonio
  • adlay (or Job’s tears)

USES

Compare to Rice and wheat; Millets need less amount of water and chemicals to cultivate. Millets are high in fiber, rich in amino acids, vitamins, and minerals, naturally gluten-free, so many north side countries liked it. It is replaceable for rice good for cholesterol, diabetes, and weight loss too.

Millet supports digestion, improves appetite, nourishes prana and blood deficiencies, increases lactation, harmonizes the stomach, and calms sleep.

Millets, due to rich in fiber, clean the intestinal tract for toxins good for digestive disorders. Fiber also regulates the speed of digestion, helps the absorption of nutrients.

Millets are rich in minerals like potassium which helps in heart function.

Comparing to wheat and Rice, millets rich in fiber controls blood pressure.

Millet is a grain that enriches with protein, antioxidants, and nutrients.

Making millets as sprouts gives us many advantages; by making millets sprouts, we can grind them as powder, and they can be consumed daily by any age people there are no constraints for consuming millets.

Nowadays, many people who are conscious about their health changed their food habits. Most people include Millets in their food chart.

  • For weight loss: It helps in weight loss since it’s high in fiber content, which helps regulate bowel movement by flushing toxins out of the body.
  • Manage diabetes: It slows down sugar absorption into the bloodstream, which helps prevent over-eating. It helps regulate your blood sugar levels.
  • Fights inflammation: It is high in antioxidants known to fight inflammation that is considered a leading cause of all metabolic diseases.
  • Rich in micronutrients: It contains zinc, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, copper, manganese, calcium, selenium, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, folate, vitamin B6, vitamin E, fatty acids, and amino acids.

DISADVANTAGES

Usage of millets should be in moderate amounts because excessive consumption can lead to various effects as the cereals contain substances that interfere with the functioning of the thyroid gland.

Millets can cause delayed digestion due to their slow digestibility as they are high in fiber.

Consuming a lot of millets can lead to bloating, stomach ache, and constipation.

To conclude, Millets are an excellent agricultural product which can be used in the modern world to live healthily and happily. It should be consumed consciously and in a moderate amount because whatever it may be, it should be consumed within the limit.
