Latch key culture, common in Singapore, refers to the children taking care of themselves. Many of us would add to this line “in the absence of parents”. It is true that having to look after themselves with both the parents working does make the children self-dependent but there are far more problems for such people.

School Results

Most of the time physical appearance of a person is not that important as the mental support of that person. For example, there is a child in fact a teenager, whose mom and dad are both gone abroad to work and provide the best possible facilities for their child. In spite of working day and night tirelessly, the pupil gets the grade that he or she does not expect. If his or her parents would have been there with him or her, he might as well have not been able to tell the result in the fear of being scolded or beaten Also check. However on the phone or via the internet once he gets to hear words like “no problem son, we know you did your best and better luck next time “, he would be more than just satisfied with his performance. This will not only encourage him to work harder next time but will also instill in him a feeling that in spite of being away from him, his parents are always with him.

Confidence Level

Not speaking his heart out can also be one of the several effects on the child whose parents are working. Since the child has not been given enough confidence to say what he wants or demands what he needs owing to their parents working outside, he may feel socially awkward. He may also not have that level of confidence to perhaps attend a party and even if he does attend, he would remain isolated from others.

Lack of Proximity

Fear in the child’s heart can also be a consequence of the parents who are working. Since he has been deprived of the love and affection of his parents and lacks the proximity with them, he might not be able to tell his parents of the pain he feels perhaps in his eyes which may turn out to be a severe disease later on Also check.

Eating Junk

Poor eating habit is the most likely thing to develop in a child as a result of supervision by the parents. Even the researches have proven this. A child, who has no one to force him to eat something substantial, would love to have toffees and chocolates all the time.

After School Engagements

A child who comes to school by a van when gets to see a child going home with his parents may have a feeling of deprivation. At the end of the day when he looks at the mother kissing her child and asking him how his day was, his father carrying his bag, and they all going for some outing after school, he might feel emotionally left out.

No doubt, the parents are forced to work outside to meet the demands of the increasingly developed world to provide the best materialistic facilities to their children but what a child needs the most is only a caring father and an extremely loving mother.
