3 things I learnt from Swades-We The People

  1. Personal background:
Mohan Bhargav remembering Kaveri Amma in the start of the film
You can attain the biggest degrees in the world, have the most stable life living abroad but it is always important to know your grassroots, the people who made you who you are, and your birthplace. Mohan Bhargav was about to launch one of the biggest projects in the USA early on in the film and his colleague was on cloud 9. However, he was depressed and was in shallow thoughts. When he was asked about it, he talked about his parent's death anniversary
  2. Ground realities:
Mohan Bhargav with his residents on his return to Charanpur

Ground realities are something that is not synonymous with people anymore. It has created havoc for people not just in Pakistan but also in the entire sub-continent. As much as I have always maintained that the biggest issue across both India and Pakistan is the media, the ground realities are showing how critical it is to both the countries. Regardless of the type of issue we have (social, economical, etc), we never take the responsibility on our shoulder and always tend to blame the regime. We may not have a job, water, electricity, good education, we try to find the easy route and blame the federal government.
Having said that, the regimes should not be off the hook as well. Whenever the residents try to hold them accountable, all they give is generic statements like "We are trying our best", which is not good enough. This causes the people to get accustomed to ground realities and they get nowhere in real life. We should accept that we ourselves are responsible for not getting good regimes. It is because we are not worth it. We don't deserve anything good because of the lack of accountabilities. We brought those regimes in power in the first place that should have never been brought. It is good to criticize but is equally good to hold yourself accountable for your work ethic.
  3. Do for your people:

Coming back to a stable life, if you have that and all the necessities at your disposal, how about making a difference in someone's life who does not? It is not just good sitting back, condemning, and feeling bad about the poor people. If you are good enough, use it for the benefit of poor people. You can make a difference in their lives single-handedly. Mohan Bhargav took more than 2 weeks off to create a hydro-electric power panel which supplied electricity across the entire village. All this came after he saw the condition of a certain farmer who could not afford to feed his family.

Swades is one of the greatest cinematic experiences of my lifetime and the most motivating spectacle I will ever witness. Additionally, it also gives an indication of how citizens are moving on with life going forward.

Mohan Bhargav had all the qualities that I mentioned above. Being a resident of the USA, he could have lived a stress-free life. However, he remembered his grassroots. He understood the emotion of a poor like the great leaders in Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, and Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto did.

We need more people like him. So if your life is good and you think your life is comfortable living abroad, always remember that there is only one homeland of you and it will always have a special place in your heart.
