Why Tesla meets earnings expectations, but sold 75 percent of its Bitcoin holding Mattel to release space venture-based toys after tie-up with SpaceX

With SpaceX turning space exploration into a very real possibility for a normal person, toys manufacturer Mattel is joining hands with the Elon Musk-founded company to create a new line of toys based on space ventures.

Financial terms of the multi-year licensing deal were not disclosed, but Mattel indicated it would release its news SpaceX product line in 2023.

Nick Karamanos, Mattel’s senior vice president of entertainment partnerships, said: “We take pride in our ability to create products and experiences that honour cultural moments and inspire humankind.

“As space exploration advances more quickly than ever before, we are thrilled to work with SpaceX and help spark limitless play patterns for the space explorer in every kid.”

Mattel will begin releasing SpaceX-inspired toys under its Matchbox brand. Simultaneously, astro-inspired collectibles will start to debut on Mattel Creations, the company’s collaboration and direct-to-consumer platform.

“At SpaceX, we believe that a future in which humanity is out among the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one in which we are not,” said Vice President Brian Bjelde. “We look forward to working with Mattel to help inspire the next generation of space explorers and enthusiasts.”

SpaceX already has an official online merchandise shop, but it offers mostly apparel, bags and hats. Mattel will add to that with designer toys, building sets, dolls, figurines and games. Mattel has a successful track record of collaborations with WWE, Disney Pixar’s Princess line-up (which they recouped from rivals Hasbro recently) and the Jurassic Park franchise among others.

Mattel had previously tied up with Tesla, another Elon Musk-owned company, and built two remote-controlled vehicles based on Cybertruck model under its Hot Wheels brand.

Mattel recently sent two Barbie dolls to the International Space Station in an effort to encourage girls to consider aerospace, engineering and STEM careers.
