Who is Imran Khan? A Look at the Pakistani Politician

Imran Khan was born in 1952, in Lahore, Pakistan. He’s best known as the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, which means Movement for Justice Party in Urdu. Imran has also been an international cricketer, philanthropist and author – his autobiographical book Cricket Cauldron was published in 1994, and he wrote Pakistan: A Personal History in 2012 – he’s currently working on his third book about small businesses and enterprises.

Early Life

Born on November 25, 1952, Imran Khan had a relatively privileged upbringing. His father was an influential lawyer who worked for Muhammad Ali Jinnah and took his family with him to Pakistan after independence in 1947. After attending elite schools in both India and Pakistan, Khan went on to attend Oxford University where he studied philosophy, politics and economics (PPE). He subsequently returned to Pakistan to play cricket professionally.

On January 8, 2015 he married British journalist Reham Khan who recently revealed that she has separated from him after 10 months of marriage because of his alleged extra marital affairs with other women. She also said that she had received death threats from some people close to him.

After his cricket career ended, Imran Khan entered politics. In 1996, he founded and led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (Pakistan Movement for Justice), a political party that focuses on anti-corruption efforts and human rights reform. In 1997, he became one of Pakistan’s 22 members of parliament, but lost his seat in 2002 elections. The following year, however, he returned to parliament as one of 35 representatives from Islamabad and served until 2008 when he again lost re-election.

He was raised under modest circumstances and attended a public school before receiving a scholarship to attend college.
