Burj Khalifa

Before its official opening in 2010, the Burj Dubai was known as the Burj Khalifa, a skyscraper in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It is well recognised for being the tallest structure in the world. With a total height of 829.8 m (2,722 ft, or slightly over half a mile) and a roof height of 828 m (2,717 ft) (excluding antenna but including a 242.6 m spire), the Burj Khalifa has held the title of tallest building and structure in the world since topping out in 2009, unseating Taipei 101.

The Burj Khalifa's exterior was finished in 2009, five years after outside construction started in 2004. The Palace of the Republic in East Berlin, the former East German parliament, provided some of the structural steel for the building's principal reinforced concrete framework. The structure debuted in 2010 as a part of Downtown Dubai, a brand-new neighbourhood. It was intended to serve as the focal point of a sizable, multipurpose complex. The government's aim to move away from an economy dependent on oil and for Dubai to obtain international prominence led to the decision to build the building. [Reference needed] The structure bears the name Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a former leader of the United Arab Emirates.Abu Dhabi and the UAE government lent Dubai money to pay its debts. The building broke numerous height records, including its designation as the tallest building in the world.

The Skidmore, Owings & Merrill team that created the Sears Tower in Chicago, the former record-holder for highest structure in the world, lead by Adrian Smith in the design of the Burj Khalifa. The project's architecture will be overseen by NORR Group Consultants International Limited, with Hyder Consulting serving as the supervising engineer. The layout was inspired by local Islamic structures, like the Great Mosque of Samarra. The three-part Y-shaped floor geometry is intended to maximise hotel and residential space. Wings and a central core with buttresses support the building's height.Although this design was derived from Tower Palace III, the Burj Khalifa's central core houses all vertical transportation except egress stairs within each of the wings.The structure also features a cladding system which is designed to withstand Dubai's hot summer temperatures. It contains a total of 57 elevators and 8 escalators.

The original Emaar developers ran into financial difficulties at a specific point in the planning and engineering process and needed additional cash. The name "Burj Dubai" was changed to "Burj Khalifa" as a result of financial assistance and money provided by Sheikh Khalifa, the then-ruler of the United Arab Emirates. Building high-density neighbourhoods and shopping centres around the landmark has proven to be profitable. The Burj Khalifa itself made little to no money, but the Downtown Dubai neighborhood's shopping centres, hotels, and residences did well financially.

Burj Khalifa has garnered many honours and has received a generally favourable response from critics. However, migrant labourers from South Asia, who made up the majority of the building labour force, were the subject of several complaints. Low pay and the practise of holding passports hostage until duties were finished were at the focus of these complaints.
