What is the Curse of Vanishing in Minecraft?

What is it?

What is it, you ask! Oh, nothing much, just a potent curse in which a player burns an enchanted book with this (vanishing) enchantment on it. In this article we're going to discuss all you need to know about the dreaded Curse of Vanishing in Minecraft.

The spawns in the game

Enchanted Book

The Curse of Vanishing has a few of its own spawns in the game. The most common of them is the chest loot. You can find them in the dungeons, villages, nether forests, end cities, and treasure chests as well.

Other places to find the enchantment include books, weapons, tools, and also armor while fishing. And, the best enchantment for fishing rods is Lureto, and the Luck of the Sea found in the enchanted books while fishing.

You can get the book from the Librarian villagers also by exchanging emeralds with them. You can change a villager's profession by placing a lantern next to them.

How the Enchantment curse works in Minecraft?

Minecraft

It's a pretty straightforward curse in terms of how it works. Once an item is enchanted, it's enchanted forever and not even the grindstone can undo the enchantment.

What happens when an item is cursed?

On being cursed, when the player dies, any item in their inventory that's been enchanted, will vanish forever. And, you can never get it back.

Apart from armor, and weapons, other items like fishing rods, carved pumpkins, compasses, and Jack O Lantern can also have this enchantment. Some players have found enchantment books while fishing and it can be quite infuriating when you find the Curse of Vanishing is one of the enchantment books.

The dangers of the curse

The dangers the curse beckons on is harsh. Previously, some players found books with Unbreaking 3, Curse of Vanishing, and Mending, which supposedly ruins the find. Though no player wants to, still some players who took the risk of putting the curse on their favorite tool, ended up regretting their decision when they died.

What to do if you find one?

If a Minecraft player finds the enchantment book in the game, you should discard it immediately. There's no redeeming quality in it, it's only going to hurt your playing reputation.

The Curse of Vanishing causes the enchanted item to disappear on death.

Obtaining the curse

You can obtain the Curse of Vanishing only from the chest loot, by trading [Java edition only], or fishing.

Usage of the curse

When a player dies, any item in their inventory enchanted with the Curse of Vanishing will not drop to the ground, rather it's removed from the world. Though if it is dropped manually, or is placed inside a chest before the player's death, the item will not vanish.

You can mitigate the effect by storing the enchanted items inside a shulker box, or set the keepInventory gamerule to true.

Likewise, if a mob drops an item, say a skeleton wearing armor or a zombie, the Curse of Vanishing effect works normally.

The Curse of Vanishing is compatible with a number of items as well.
