As a result, developing a lifestyle is a way to develop a sense of self and produce cultural icons that are meaningful to an individual. Not every element of a lifestyle is chosen voluntarily. The lifestyle options and the symbols that an individual can project onto others and themselves might be limited by the social and technological systems that surround them. [4]
In contemporary culture, the distinctions between one's individual identity and the behaviours that define a specific way of life grow more hazy .[5] For instance, leading a "green lifestyle" entails adopting attitudes and doing things that use less resources and generate less waste (a smaller ecological footprint), and getting a sense of identity from these actions and beliefs.
