Just four years had passed since the first ODI cricket match, when the inaugural World Cup was held in England in June 1975. However, a different Women's Cricket World Cup had already taken place two years before to the inaugural men's competition, and as early as 1912, a triangular tournament of Test matches between Australia, England, and South Africa had been staged, featuring numerous international teams.

This page discusses the men's 50-over competition. See Women's Cricket World Cup for the women's 50-over competition. See ICC World Test Championship for the Test competition. See ICC Champions Trophy for the "mini World Cup". See ICC Men's T20 World Cup and ICC Women's T20 World Cup for the Twenty20 competition.

The international championship of One Day International (ODI) cricket is called the Cricket World Cup (formally known as the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup)[4]. Every four years, the International Cricket Council (ICC), which oversees the sport, organizes the event. A preliminary qualification round precedes the finals competition. One of the most watched sports events in the world, the competition is referred to as the "flagship event of the international cricket calendar"
