What is gaming disorder?

The decision to include gaming disorder in ICD-11 is based on evaluations of the available data and represents the opinion of specialists from various fields and geographical areas who participated in the technical discussions that WHO conducted in order to develop ICD-11.

The inclusion of gaming disorder in ICD-11 comes after treatment programs for individuals with conditions similar to those of gaming disorder were developed in many parts of the world. This will cause health professionals to pay more attention to the risks associated with the development of gaming disorder and, consequently, to pertinent preventive and treatment measures. 

For gaming disorder to be diagnosed, the behaviour pattern must be of sufficient severity to result in significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning and would normally have been evident for at least 12 months.
