What is CCE ?

For better understanding of CCE we should have basic knowledge of traditional evaluation process and it's drawbacks...

As we all know that evaluation is an important  part of teaching - learning process. It helps to measure how much students could learn from a lesson , what are their strengths and weaknesses, whether the teaching method was effective or not, whether the teaching objectives were fulfilled or not etc..

But in early days it was summative evaluation which assessed a student only on the basis of marks acquired in the Annual examination or terminal examination which was not appropriate way to measure the overall progress of a child. A single exam can't evaluate every aspects of student's development. This marks based examination also create tension, fear among students which is against the child psychology and the concept of child centric learning. Hence a new evaluation process was introduced, known as CCE. Let's see  what it is...

CCE stands for Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation. It refers to a system of school based evaluation of students that covers all aspects of students' development ---- both scholastic and co-scholastic. This is a process of assessment mandated by the " Right to Education Act" of India. This approach to assessment has been introduced by state governments as well as by the CBSE in India.

The first term " continuous" refers to the evaluation of students' progress as a continuous process that spreads over the entire span of academic session. It contains the regularity of assessment, frequency of unit testing, diagnosis of learning gaps, use of corrective measures etc..

The second term "comprehensive" refers to the scheme covers both scholastic and co-scholastic domain. Scholastic domain includes learner's knowledge, understanding, application of knowledge etc.. While co-scholastic domain includes life skills, interests, values, attitudes, physical health etc..

The main aim of CCE is to evaluate every aspects of children during their presence at school. This is believed to help to reduce the pressure on the child during /before examinations. This brings a lot of changes in traditional system as it has introduced the gradation system of evaluation and a number of project works as a part of co-curricular activity.
