What is Brucellosis: A terrific news from China!

Another disease these days is the havoc of brucellosis in China. In Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu province, more than 3 thousand patients have been infected. According to Lanzhou's Health Commission, the disease is caused by contact with infected animals. It is also known as Malta Fever.

 

According to China's official website Global Times, the bacteria spread from the pharma factory in Lejou City, where the vaccine for brucellosis was being produced. From here, the bacteria reached humans in the form of aerosols and spread the infection. An alert has been issued in China, and select 11 hospitals have been ordered to treat patients free of cost.

Brucellosis was a common disease in China in the 1980s, although the condition later became critical. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the disease does not spread from one person to another, but infected food can spread brucellosis.

1. What is brucellosis?

It is a disease caused by bacteria. These bacteria infect animals, pigs, goats, and dogs. Humans also become ill when exposed to these infected animals. Infection is spread in humans by eating their meat or drinking their polluted water. Bacteria are also present in the air of the infected area in the form of aerosols, during which humans can become infected even while breathing. The World Health Organization says that the highest risk of this disease is when the person uses raw milk of the animal or eats milk.

3. When and how this disease spread in China

According to the website of the Health Commission of Lanzhou city, the bacteria spread after an incident on November 28 in the pharma factory near the Veterinary Research Institute. Work was underway from July 24 to August 10, 2010, to prepare the vaccine for brucellosis here. During this period, disinfectants of expiry date were used in the institute, due to which the bacteria did not completely disappear. Bacteria spread in the form of aerosols released from here, and people were infected.

On December 7, 2019, the production of the vaccine in the factory was completely stopped when the matter came to light. Eight people were also punished.

4. How to protect?

If the matter comes in the country, then keep the distance from animals. Approach them with the necessary precautions. Avoid eating meat. It is better not to eat outside food. Sanitizing the house is a better option if there is livestock nearby. Use only after boiling milk and water.
