What does G stands for in 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G and what is its significance?

Mobile Networks today play an important role in our day to day lives. But now and then you might have wondered what does the letter G stands for in Mobile Network Technologies such 2G, 3G, 4G, etc. G stands for Generation of the Mobile Networking Technology. Currently we are in the 5th Generation of Mobile Network evolution. So lets take a walk down memory lane and find out what were the previous Generations of technologies and what is the future.

The Mobile Networking Technologies in the current generation were evolved from the 1st Generation of Mobile Network which was introduced in Japan in the Year 1979. Back then only the Rich had access to these Technology. I the 1st generation User was restricted to either page or call the other party. The Cell phones were large and heavy and served the purpose of calling only. As the technology evolved user could now send text messages to other party.

In the Second Generation of Mobile Networking technologies like GPRS, EDGE, etc were developed to facilitate the use of internet on Mobile devices. This led to the development in Modern Cell phones, which could access internet and stream media anywhere around the Globe. But the data transfer speeds were inadequate, which led to development of faster Mobile Network Technology known as 3G.

The introduction of 3G of mobile Networking led to a significant growth in Mobile production and sales. 3G Networking also introduced Video Telephony and could offer maximum download and upload speeds of about 10Mbps. This era introduced a portable internet services in the form of Dongles.

As the Technology further developed, 4G came into being which led to a significant drop in data usage charges and it offered speeds upto 100mbps. LTE was a further step up in 4G, as it offered HD calling over Networks free of cost. 4G marked revolution in Mobility and led to flexible data plans and wide range of networking products from portable wi-fi hub to 4G routers. Networks got a lot more faster and calling got crystal clear.

Finally the current generation which is the 5G is is deployment stages which offers speeds upto 1GB per sec. What's next in the Mobile Networking ? Now the technologies are being made available even for the people who couldn't afford it a few years back. Going ahead the Networks are going to get way more faster than light and push large volumes of data over long distances in the blink of an eye.
