What are the Types of Computer Networks

There are mainly many types of Computer Networks are:-

1. PAN

2. WAN

3. MAN

4. LAN

5. CAN

PAN:- PAN stands for "Personal Area Network." PAN is a computer network organized around a person. Personal area networks typically involve a mobile computer, a cell phone, and a handheld computing device such as a PDA. You can use these networks to transfer files, including email and calendar appointments, digital photos, and music.

Personal area networks can be constructed with cables or be wireless. Personal area networks generally cover a range of fewer than 10 meters ( about 30 feet)

WAN ( Wide Area Network)

It is a Computer network covering a far wider area than a LAN ( Local Area Network). WANs cover cities, countries, continents, and the whole world.

A WAN is formed by linking LANs together. For example, several major LANs in a city can connect, forming a WAN. This network uses telephone lines, satellite communication,  microwave transmission, etc. These transmission media are linked with the router. A router is a device that interconnects two or more computer networks.

Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)

It is a Computer Network usually spanning a campus or a city, which typically connects a few local area networks. A MAN often provides efficient connections to a wide area network (MAN). Optical fiber is used in MAN. It is larger than LAN but smaller than WAN. A cable TV network is a good example of a MAN.

Local Area Network (LAN)

The field of Computers is the prime field which has made rapid-advancement in every field. With the advancement of technology, it has been possible that computers may themselves communicate.

LAN is a network that is typically personal to an institution. LAN system has proved its usefulness for the banking industry. LAN is a system in which computers are interconnected. Under this technology, several terminals can be used in the whole building at various places with sharing means. All the terminals are connected to the main computer called Server.

Elements of LAN

LAN has the following elements :

1. Server

2. Work Stations

3. Network Interface Unit

4. Communication Channels

Server:- It is the main computer that acts as a host and provides data, software, etc. to the other terminals linked with it. It serves the work stations. A LAN can also have more than one server.

Work Stations:- Work Stations mean computer/s attached to LAN. Without workstations, LAN cannot exist. Workstations don't need to have a hard-disk.

Network Interface Channels:- It means connecting with the cables. Three types of cable are used in LAN installations, which are as follows.

1. Twisted Pair Cables:- These are like telephone cables.

2. Co-axial Cables:- These are like TV cables.

3. Fibre Optical Cables:- These are newly introduced made of plastic or glass. These are durable.

DOMAIN NAME

The domain name system (DNS) is how Internet domain names are located and translated into Internet Protocol addresses.

You would have seen that there are different types of server addresses. For example,

www.yahoo.com

www.wikipedia.com

www.obc.org

In the above three addresses, the www prefix is a web server annum. Dot (.) com and dot (.) org have been used as suffixes. These suffixes are domain indicators. Use of com means that yahoo. is a commercial organization, and org means that obc is an organization ( profit/or nonprofit). The .com or .org is the top level of the domain. the second-level domain is direct to the left of the top-level domain yahoo is the second-level domain. There can be third, fourth, fifth, and many more levels of domains with virtually no limitations.
