Situated in Kent, South East England, Medway is an authority district. In 2022, the population numbered 280,318. In 1998, Medway Towns—a unitary authority—was established by the merger of Rochester-upon-Medway and Gillingham. Though it remains a part of Kent's ceremonial county, it is now a unitary authority region administered by Medway Council, separate from Kent County Council.
