A single government can’t bring the change to save the environment from the present serious threats; it has to be done mutually by every government and the people living on this earth for the safe future of the next generation, believes three times ‘Green Oscar award’ winner and famous Indian filmmaker and environmentalist, Mike Pandey.

He is presently in the valley shooting for his documentary ‘Earth Matters’, saying, earth is the mother of millions of creatures and it is the responsibility of every human being to save it.

Pandey, who was also selected by Time Magazine as ‘the hero of Environment- 2009’ believes the recent cyclonic windstorm in Kashmir was the result of environmental imbalance. “Blistering winds are a small sign of ecological imbalance. Human beings are the only intelligent creatures that can save the earth from all this, otherwise we have to bear the brunt.”

When asked how he sees Kashmir in terms of environment conservation, he said the situation of world famous Dal Lake has improved a lot but enough needs to be done to save this water body and the government has to take strong initiatives. “Very happy to see the improvement of the lake. Smell has at a large extent disappeared from it, which is an indication that life is returning back to the lake which was dying when I saw it last time.”

As an expert how do you find the lake ten years back and today, Pandey showed satisfaction saying there are positive indications. “You need some more hi-tech machines to restore it fully.”

Terming sanitation part as a third level pollution threat to the lake as heavy siltation to the lake causes plundering of trees which results in hundreds of tons of soil erodes into the lake.”

Message to the government:

Pandey suggested the state government frame good and effective policies to save the environment and then make sure the policies are implemented on ground only then the success can be achieved. “Holding awareness campaigns and programs in closed rooms will not work. It has to be done with full dedication and affection.”

He said Kashmir is in the Himalayan ranges and is one of the delicate ecosystems.

“Uneven rain and snowfall and gusty winds which J&K has been witnessing over the years are the symbols of erratic climatic conditions.”
