PM Modi bids retiring members of parliament farewell and praises their contributions. Within the Rajya Sabha

On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said goodbye to Rajya Sabha members who were retiring while complimenting his predecessor, Manmohan Singh, on his contributions to the House. Modi praised Singh's commitment to bolstering democracy, citing an incident in which Singh used a wheelchair to enter the Rajya Sabha and cast his vote.
Despite the government's admirable efforts, Modi made a pointed remark directed at the Congress, thanking Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge for creating a "black paper" against his government and calling it "kaala teeka" (a ward against the evil eye).

In a lighthearted comment, Modi called the opposition MPs' black robe protests in the Rajya Sabha a "fashion parade." Wishing everyone retiring the best, Modi said he hoped their experiences would help future generations.
Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar's home was to host a farewell ceremony on Thursday for retiring Rajya Sabha members. At Rashtrapati Bhavan, members convened for a group photo at 10 am prior to attending the farewell function scheduled for 6:30 pm.

Reflecting on past parliamentary moments, Mr. Modi recalled Singh's pledge during the vote of confidence at the old Parliament building, highlighting his sense of responsibility and dedication to democracy. Mr. Modi expressed hope that the outgoing members will continue to actively contribute to the country's progress. Parliament continues to discuss the Interim Union Budget 2024-25 and Interim Budget of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Mr. Modi emphasized the importance of the outgoing members witnessing the country's progress and honoring its resilience during the Covid-19 pandemic. Referring to the opposition's actions in the ongoing budget session, Mr. Modi termed them as attempts to ward off evil and hinder the country's progress. The meeting was extended until February 10 to present the White Paper on the economy before and after 2014.

While replying to both Houses of Parliament, Modi criticized the economic management and policy paralysis of the UPA government. The day's agenda included a motion for election to the Central Advisory Committee, moved by Union Minister Bupender Yadav.
