Top 7 ways to conserve water

Humans use water for domestic purposes such as cooking, washing, and cleaning. It is also used in industries for various processes. So now comes the question, ''how can you save water?'' Are we using water sparingly? Do you know the consequences of wastage of water?

Let us look at some of the common ways to conserve water below:

  • Use showers sparingly: We are all used to turning the shower on continuously while having a bath. It is not a good practice as it leads to indiscriminate wastage of water. As far as possible, catch water in a bucket for domestic purposes. The same applies if you go to your friend's house. There is no 'your water' or 'my water.' Water is a resource shared by all citizens of a nation or world. This requires a shift in the attitude of people. Similarly, you could turn off the fans and lights when you are in public places, if not in use.
  • Use taps as they should be: This only means taps should not be left running. It very commonly observed that taps kept open even when not needed. For example, if you are washing your vessels or clothes, the tap can be turned off now and then. I am sure you wouldn't require the tap for the entire duration. Another example is the overflowing of tap water from buckets. Make sure you stand near the bucket to see that water doesn't overflow. Avoid multitasking when you are filling water.
  • Be alert when watering plants: Most often, a hose is used to water plants. Make sure it doesn't have any leakage. Do not leave the hosepipe on the ground when attending to other jobs. This not only wastes water but also floods the entire area surrounding your house. The best method could be the use of sprinklers to water plants. These are fixed to the ground and can turn in all directions.
  • Do away with maids as much as possible: Studies have indicated that cooks/maids are partly responsible for keeping the taps turned on for an extended period of time. If you feel maids are indispensable, make sure there is someone at home to monitor them. You could also educate them on the proper use of water.
  • Fix leaky flushes: Do you own a blush purchased a decade ago? If so, get it replaced with a new one. There are a lot of brands of toilet flushes available in the market today. Make a list of all the brands and choose a brand wisely.
  • Dripping taps, a cause for concern: How often have we ignored dripping taps? We must have felt it is such a waste of time attending to it. The truth of the matter is broken/damaged taps cost you a lot!! They could burn a hole in your pocket and at the most inappropriate time. So it is better to fix it at the earliest and be done with it!!
  • Last but not least: Have you heard of rainwater harvesting? It involves creating a provision in your apartment or house to collect rainwater during the rainy seasons. As it rains, water that is collected is filtered and used for all purposes. If your flat or locality hasn't made a provision so far, make sure to talk to the person in charge at the earliest.

As responsible citizens, it is time we rose to the occasion and solved the water crisis. It is better to be safe than sorry!!
