What is a natural disaster?

Natural Disaster is a calamity, either natural or which occurs due to human mistakes. This results in the loss of lives and natural resources, and ultimately the people suffer.

  • A natural disaster is the average life routine of society and affects a large section of the population.
  • There is a widespread loss of lives and property.
  • Natural disasters affect society adversely, and external assistance is needed to solve the problems caused by the disaster.
  • Thus, natural disaster is the consequence of a materialistic economy, increasing population, and an unnecessary's system.
  • Every natural disaster has its specific effects.

All such incidents that put human society into trouble and human being feeling insecure are called natural disasters. Earthquake, floods, storms, drought, and landslide are all the example of Natural disaster.

 

What are the main types of disasters?

  • The disaster that appears abruptly - Earthquake, Tsunami, Eruption of volcanoes, Landslide, Flood, Tornado, Avalanche, cloud burst, etc.
  • The disaster that appears gradually - Drought, hailstorm, environment deterioration, the transformation of land into desert, etc.
  • War

5. Drought

Perennial Drought condition is one disaster that has been a cause of concern for both the people and the administration. In our country, there are a few areas that never face the problem of drought.

Any area which gets 25% or less than the average rainfall is called a drought condition. It is called drought when the rainfall is less than 50% of the average rainfall or when the area does not get rain for two consecutive years.

 Drought-prone areas in India.

  1. The dry and semi-dry regions of Rajasthan where every two years drought conditions occur.
  2. Gujrat, Punjab, Western Uttar Prades, Tamil Nadu, Royal Seema, and Telangana areas witness drought every three years.
  3. Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Southern Karnataka, and Vidarbha areas were once in every four years drought occurs.

 

4. Flood Disaster

Accumulation of a large quantity of water on a big area which causes loss to lives and property, is called a flood.

Floods are caused due to an increase in the level of water in water reservoirs beyond their limit; due to heavy rains, the water overflows in rivers, storms and tornados occur, and cracks or breaking of dams, a large area is inundated.

3. Earthquake Disaster

This disaster abruptly crops ups. It can come at any place, any time, and without any warning. This incidence creates movements, not the earth's crust, and causes shaking of the ground. 

It is believed that the earth's surface is made of big plates. These plates shift towards each other due to the earth's internal heat. Their shifting or expanding causes earthquakes.

Where two places meet, mountains are formed, and where they shift, new surfaces are formed. Volcano explosion is also related to this.

2. Landslide Disaster

Although landslides happen gradually, sudden landslides without prior indications may also occur. There are no definite previous indications of landslides. Therefore it is difficult to make a forecast of landslides. The high landslide-prone areas can be identified by the earlier history of the concerned area.

1. Tsunami Disaster

Earthquakes, eruptions from a volcano cause a sudden disturbance in the base of the Ocean, causing abrupt displacement of oceanic water.

Consequently, very high waves are produced. These are called Tsunami or earthquake-affected oceanic waves
