An Enormous Official Baby Name Web Database at No CostSince almost every newborn in the United States is immediately registered with the Social Security Administration (SSA), this government agency compiles the best database of genuine baby names used in the country.  This database, which is a terrific source for the top 100 baby names, is surprisingly simple to use and accessible for free at an SSA website.The Most Popular Names - Top 100 Baby Names   Did you know that the top three girl names in 2006 were Emily, Emma, and Madison, and the top three boy names were Joshua, Michael, and Jacob in 2006?  Okay, so perhaps you did, but what about the top 3 from 1890 or 1960?   Curious about the top names from 1890 and 1960?  I'll explain in a second, but for now, continue reading to find out how to locate and utilize the database on your own to uncover the top 100 baby names. This will allow you to view the top 50 or even top 1000 names for any given year or decade.Even a state-by-state listing is available.Now, for the statistics: in 1960, the top 3 names for boys were David, Michael, and James; in 1890, the top 3 names for girls were Mary, Anna, and Elizabeth; and in 1890, the top 3 names for boys were John, William, and James.Accessing the SSA Baby Name IndexSimply enter www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/ into your browser's address bar to access the database and obtain your top 100 baby names. Alternatively, you can search for the database using Google; when you key in "social security baby names," the SSA database page appears first. Making Use of the DatabaseIt's quite simple to use the database.  We should be grateful to our government for offering such a helpful service for the most popular baby names.  There are four search options available on the main page of www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/.

1.Popular Names by Birth Year: This report lists the most popular names for a specific year. You can request that specific statistical information, such as the percentage of all births or the total number of births, be displayed for each name.  The report for the top 100 baby names is this one.

2.Popularity of a Name: You may examine historical changes in a name's popularity with this report.  You may check how it ranked over the last 100 years, for example, if you key in "Michael" and want to see it over a 100-year period.  Although "Michael" was not so popular a century ago (it was ranked #48 in 1907), it was the most popular boy's name for all but one year between 1954 and 1998—quite a run!

3.Order of State's Top 5 Names: isn't this report delightful?  Do people in Maine and Alabama use distinct names?  Indeed!   See the top 5 names for each of the 50 states by selecting a year.  Additionally, a link to the top 100 names broken down by state can be clicked.

4.Top 1000 names by decade: Simply select a decade to view the average of the top 1000 names for that decade.  This is how you see the "big picture."

 

You only need to complete one or two fields for each of these searches, then click the Go button.
