Amidst the ongoing controversies, director Sudipto Sen's The Kerala Story has reached the cinema halls. Due to the controversies, the makers had to make changes in the trailer of the film as well. If we look at it this way, making films based on true events has always attracted filmmakers, but when the maker brings a true incident on screen, his responsibility increases.
Cinematic liberties can be taken in fictional stories, but in a film based on true events, even the smallest illogical thing becomes jarring and as a result reduces its impact. The film revolves around the alleged conversion of young Hindu girls and radicalization of Islam in Kerala. The film claims to be based on the true stories of three young girls from Kerala.
story begins with Fatima alias Shalini Unnikrishnan (Ada Sharma) surrounded by investigating officers, who is coming to terms with her horrific and painful past. Narrating the story, she says, to know when I joined ISIS, it is important to know how and why I joined. Then the back story begins where four girl students take admission in a nursing school in Kasargod, Kerala, in which Shalini falls into deep trouble while sharing a room with her roommates Geetanjali (Siddhi Idnani), Nimah (Yogita Bihani) and Asifa (Sonia Balani). Become friends.
Shalini, Geetanjali and Nimah are completely unaware of Asifa's sinister intentions. In reality, Asifa has a secret agenda of taking her roommates away from their family and religion and converting them to Islam. For this, she takes the help of her two fake brothers and lays a trap to radicalize the girls. To brainwash them, they are given intoxicants, hatred towards family and distrust of religion is created. Not only this, Rameez, who traps Shalini in his love trap, makes her pregnant. Due to fear of the society, Shalini accepts Islam, marries an unknown man, leaves India and escapes to Syria via Pakistan and Afghanistan. The journey ahead proves to be even more terrifying for Shalini, here in India her two friends Gitanjali and Nimah also have to go through hell.
'The Kerala Story' dominates the box office
As director Sudipto Sen has managed to create fear and uneasiness through his characters. But his characters are completely black and white. There is no scope for gray characters in his story. Brainwashing the youth and drowning them in terrorism is a very serious issue, but its projection in the film seems misguided. The process of brainwashing the girls in the film seems very childish. The way Asifa and her friends trick the graduated girls does not seem convincing. There are many scenes which are difficult to digest, like Geetanjali spitting on her father lying in the hospital, Shalini going to Syria despite knowing the truth in Colombo.
the violent and rape scenes in the film can shock the weak hearted. There are many such dialogues which can hurt the sentiments of people of different communities and ideologies. The editing of the film could have been a little more tight. However, Prashantnu Mohapatra's cinematography has shown the world from Kerala to Afghanistan very well. In terms of acting, Ada Sharma as Shalini on one hand displayed her innocence and on the other hand as Fatima she portrayed fear, helplessness, anger and pain very well. Ada's work in the film is commendable. Yogita Bihani and Siddhi Idnani as friends have also done justice to their roles, but their characters seem to lack depth. The supporting cast is fine.
