Skanda Movie Review

In director Boyapati Sreenu's Telugu action-packed film "Skanda - The Attacker," featuring Ram Pothineni, Sreeleela, and Saiee Manjrekar, an early conflict arises when the son of the Telangana chief minister (played by Sharath Lohithaswa) elopes with the daughter of the Andhra Pradesh chief minister (portrayed by Ajay Purkar). Formerly close friends, the two CMs become bitter enemies. One of them defiantly warns the other, saying, "You won't even get past the gates of my home, let alone cross the toll gates of my state."

As the story unfolds in "Skanda - The Attacker," midway through the film, a character identifies himself as "Seema bidda" (son of Rayalaseema soil) and emerges as a formidable force, bringing both CMs to their knees. Additionally, another character ominously warns the CMs that they won't hesitate to eliminate anyone who obstructs their path, likening them to pickles bottled up in jars! Indeed, one way to approach "Skanda" is to find amusement in such dialogues, as the film lacks substantial depth or compelling elements otherwise.

"Skanda - The Attacker" delivers the quintessential Boyapati Sreenu film experience, complete with high-octane action sequences in slow motion featuring heads rolling, limbs being severed, and characters impaled on spears or daggers. The film also boasts verbose rhyming dialogues that are ripe for meme material, accompanied by excessively loud music courtesy of S. Thaman, who seems to have been instructed to intensify the drumbeats and maintain a consistently high volume throughout. Unfortunately, leading women in the film are sidelined with limited roles. While nuance and subtlety are not to be expected, enduring "Skanda" becomes a test of patience and an onslaught on the senses.

The prologue introduces Srikanth as Rudraganti Ramakrishna Raju, an entrepreneur from Rudrarajupuram, unjustly sentenced to death for crimes he didn't commit. Meanwhile, his daughter (portrayed by Saiee Manjrekar) fights for her life. As the stage is set, a hero must emerge to ensure the triumph of good over evil.

Ram embodies the hypermasculine savior, confronting the caricatured portrayals of the powerful chief ministers. While the goons in the film also receive their fair share of slow-motion shots, Ram's sequences far outnumber theirs. At one point, a character compares his speed to that of a tiger, triggering a sequence of 22 slow-motion shots before the dialogue progresses to its second line.

Ram's character is depicted as effortlessly taming a fierce bull injected with a drug, reminiscent of Bhallaladeva's feat in "Baahubali." Additionally, he is portrayed as a crude college student who casually refers to his classmate (Sreeleela) as an 'average' woman. Justifying his unconventional views on beauty, he humorously argues that marrying an average-looking woman would make him stand out as handsome. However, these remarks take on a different significance later in the film when it is revealed that he was a Stanford University topper skilled in ethical hacking. Despite his current activities involving hacking, his actions are motivated by his love for his family and his father's close friend, Ramakrishna Raju.

Stretching over 167 minutes, the straightforward tale of revenge and retribution in "Skanda - The Attacker" is filled with numerous slow-motion shots and rhyming dialogues. The film incorporates international film and literary references, such as likening someone to Tarzan, featuring the word "Matrix" prominently in the background during a goon's planning, and quoting "To be or not to be." Additionally, a character humorously refers to Ram as a "walking Rolls Royce." Unfortunately, despite the lavish portrayal of women dressed in fine silks, their roles are limited to being mere props. Actresses like Gowtami are underutilized, confined to either weeping or expressing affection towards their sons. Meanwhile, a group of young women swoon over the hero, adding to the film's spectacle.

"Skanda - The Attacker" lacks innovation in storytelling, characterizations, music, or action choreography, resulting in a bloated experience. The film relentlessly celebrates high-decibel mass festivity, prompting viewers to consider keeping noise-cancelling earphones close at hand. Moreover, the revelation of a sequel towards the end feels more like a foreboding threat than an exciting prospect.
