When Road House was first published in 1989, it became cult favorite, but the 2024 modern retelling seems to be gaining ground on the original. Road House made a respectable $30 million at the domestic box office when it debuted in 1989 (source: The Numbers). But it wasn't until after its premiere, when it debuted on cable TV and became cult favorite, that the film found its following. The over-the-top violence and corny humor appealed to a certain audience, which is why it was nevertheless regarded as a seminal action film from the 1980s.
The film received a direct-to-video sequel in 2006 that carried over the plot, but it felt like a phony money grab since none of the main cast was there. There were therefore concerns about what would be accomplished when a remade version of the 1989 movie starring Gyllenhaal and including UFC legend Conor McGregor in his acting debut was announced. But after the movie's SXSW premiere, preliminary reviews seem to give it a considerably higher rating than the previous one. However, there are explanations for why that was certain to occur.
