Unnao Rape case in a village in Uttar Pradesh

 

One day in June 2017 a 16 -year-old girl goes missing in small-town Unnao in Uttar Pradesh, She is found after 9 days later in Police custody as per the instructions of the Local Legislator to the Police. Her FIR was not getting registered due to Political pressure. However, she gathered courage and with the help of her relatives wrote to the District Magistrate, Chief Justice of India, Prime Minister's office, CBI. She was produced before the court but did not name the legislator due to fear.

Since her family was under continuous pressure and was receiving threatening calls, she tried to commit suicide in front of the Chief Minister's office by pouring kerosene and setting up herself on fire. After this incident, the news went national and ultimately the case went on the fast track. The case was shifted to Delhi after which the girl mentioned the involved legislator's name. 

During this course, her father was falsely implicated in a case of possession of firearms and was taken to police custody where he died. His uncle took up the case and was also implicated in false cases to pressurize to withdraw the case.

In July 2019 the girl along with her 2 aunts was traveling for the court case proceeding when a vehicle collided and her 2 aunts died on the spot an the girl suffered serious injuries.

Finally, the Supreme Court gave a landmark judgment and the legislator was given life sentence. This sentence was significant considering the cases against the Political bigwigs who go Scott free which has been the history so far. This is one of a rare case in the history of Indian Politics that a serving politician irrespective of the clout has been sentenced to life by the Supreme Court of India
