Many films have been made so far on women's issues and patriotism. Especially female directors have many times raised debates on the condition and direction of women through their films, but director Kiran Rao in his film 'Lapata Ladies' focuses on patriarchal thinking about women, gender inequality, education, dowry system, self-reliance, domestic issues. All the issues like violence and inferiority are exposed layer by layer. The specialty of her films is that she not only brings out the problems related to women, but also tries to provide solutions to them and that too in a light-hearted manner.

Story of 'Missing Ladies'

The backdrop of the story is of a rural area about two decades ago, which is in the imaginary Nirmal Pradesh somewhere in Madhya Pradesh. Deepak (Sparsh Srivastava) has come to bring his newly married Phool (Nitanshi Goyal) home. Wedding season is in full swing, so everywhere new brides are seen wearing red veils. In the same train in which Deepak and Phool board, there is another wedding dress. The twist in the story comes when Deepak comes home and finds out that his bride has changed. He has brought home someone else's bride Pushpa (Pratibha Ranta) in the confusion of the long veil.

Phool somehow saves herself from going to the other groom's house and remains at the station. Here Deepak is desperately searching for Phool and he also goes to the police station and lodges a report with the Inspector (Ravi Kishan), while there Pushpa's husband lodges a report against Pushpa for stealing jewelery and running away. During investigation, the police suspect Pushpa that he is part of a gang. Is Pushpa really involved in any crime? Does Deepak find his flower? Once the brides are found, are they able to reach their destination? You will get answers to all these questions after watching the film.

Missing Ladies' Movie Review

Kiran, who has directed films like 'Dhobi Ghat', has raised many issues through her film, but she has not allowed the film to become preachy anywhere. The veil which has led to exchange of brides also attacks the patriarchal thinking in a way and it is at this point that she sets the mood of the film. There are many female characters in the rural scenario and through each character they mark an issue, like the illiterate Phool is happy only after getting married, but while living at the station, she discovers her cooking skills and makes herself self-reliant. On the other side is Pushpa, who wants to become something after studying further. Manju (Chhaya Kadam), who runs a tea stall at the station, has decided to live her life alone, rejecting domestic violence and an incompetent husband. The character of Deepak's sister-in-law is that of a woman who is spending her days waiting for her husband, who has been living abroad for a long time, by making a drawing of her.

Kiran also takes a deep dig at the fact that the 'respectable girl' of the society is the biggest fraud, that is because due to this status she is never able to question. But the beauty of Kiran's direction is that the film does not become heavy with so many issues. Entertains a lot. Makes you laugh, makes you cry. The film emphasizes on the idea of women being self-reliant as well as fulfilling their dreams.

The writing of 'Missing Ladies' is quite interesting. There is cheekiness in Biplab Goswami's story, Sneha Desai's screenplay and Divya Nidhi Sharma's dialogues. Casting is another strong point of the film, which has been done brilliantly by Romil Modi. Cinematographer Naulakha has done a commendable job. Talking about music, composer Ram Sampath has given music as per the theme.

The strong acting aspect of the cast works as icing on the cake. Lead cast Nitanshi Goyal, Sparsh Srivastava and Pratibha Ranta have acted on the small screen, but these actors, who are debuting on the big screen in the film, have lived their respective important characters very beautifully. While Nitanshi has maintained her innocence and innocence as a flower, Pratibha is very popular in her flamboyant and rebellious style. Sparsh has convincingly portrayed the character of Deepak, who is in search of a wife. Ravi Kishan's special acting performance as Inspector wins hearts. He maintains the dose of entertainment in the story.
