How Japan has immense opportunities for Indian apparel exporters through AEPC.

According to the Garment Export Promotion Council, India has a big chance to grow garment exports to Japan as a result of a drop in Chinese clothing exports. To attend the 12th iteration of the India Textile Trends Fair, the AEPC sent a group of members to Tokyo, Japan.

At the fair's opening, AEPC chairman Naren Goenka said, "Apparel imports into Japan have witnessed a positive mark in the last three years," according to the Press Trust of India. Based on Export Import Data, Japan's total imports from the rest of the world, valued at $28.49 billion in 2018, have now risen to $46.72 billion."

According to the ET Bureau, around 180 exhibitors are participating in the trade event to highlight Indian manufacturing. The AEPC is necessary because India now only imports 1% of Japanese goods.

According to Goenka, "We hold a strong business opportunity in Japan, reflected by the fact that China, which has been a major supplier of clothing to Japan, has seen a decline in the last five years, giving India a significant advantage." "Another benefit for us is the duty-free access for Indian ready-made clothing after the Indo-Japan free trade agreement, as opposed to about 9% for China and Turkey."

The APEC reported on its website that the India Tex Trends Fair took place from July 19 to July 21 in Shibuya, Tokyo. The purpose of the event is to connect Japanese importers and merchants with Indian exporters.

Opportunities in Specific Segments

There are a number of specific segments in the Japanese apparel market where Indian companies have a good chance of success. These include:

Men's and women's casual wear: Japanese consumers are increasingly looking for stylish and comfortable casual wear. Indian apparel companies are well positioned to meet this demand with their wide range of casual wear options.

Sportswear: The Japanese market for sportswear is growing rapidly. Indian companies can capitalize on this growth by exporting their high-quality, affordable sportswear to Japan.

Kidswear: The Japanese market for kids wear is also growing rapidly. Indian companies can target this market with their stylish and affordable kids wear.

Challenges

While there are a number of opportunities for Indian apparel businesses to export to Japan, there are also some challenges that they will need to overcome. These challenges include:

High Japanese tariffs: Japanese tariffs on apparel imports are relatively high. This can make it difficult for Indian companies to compete with Chinese and other foreign competitors.

Language barrier: The Japanese language barrier can be a challenge for Indian companies that are looking to export to Japan. Indian companies will need to invest in translation services or hire Japanese-speaking staff in order to overcome this challenge.

Cultural differences: There are some cultural differences between India and Japan that Indian companies will need to be aware of. For example, Japanese consumers are generally more conservative than Indian consumers. Indian companies will need to take this into account when designing and marketing their products for the Japanese market.

Conclusion

Despite the challenges, there are a number of reasons to believe that Indian apparel businesses have a significant opportunity to increase exports to Japan. The declining Chinese clothing exports, growing Japanese demand for Indian apparel, strengthening trade ties between India and Japan, and opportunities in specific segments all point to a bright future for the Indian apparel industry in Japan.
