Is electromagnetic radiation is harmful for us?

Electricity is all around us all the time it makes our life easier and safer but is this such a thing that too much electricity can destroy our life. The thing that is the foundation of the modern world is slowly being killing us. Before we drive deeper let's try to understand what electricity is and how it affects us.

Electricity is a movement of an electric charge which generates an electric field and magnetic field that spread out through space and carry energy.  This phenomenon is called electromagnetic radiation.  Radiation is the word that makes people very nervous but to radiates means giving off.  Like when the radiator in the house gives off heat in the form of infrared radiation.  A different part of the electromagnetic spectrum causes a different type of radiation and many of them are perfectly harmless but some of them can be dangerous though.

Radiation having very short wavelengths like UV rays,  X rays, and gamma rays are strong enough to reap-off electrons out of the atoms which can cause burns and genetic damage. The rest of the spectrum was a large range of longer wavelengths like visible light, infrared microwave to a radio wave. This is the kind of radiation that is emitted by all sorts of human technologies like mobile phones, Wi-Fi router, electric power lines, and household appliances.

This radiation doesn't dis route molecules in our body however some kind of radiations can stimulate muscles and nerves and can make the hair of your body vibrate.  This happens to us all the time for example the pleasant warm feeling on the beach is your skin is heating up, exposure to electromagnetic infrared radiation from the Sun.

We are surrounded by a natural and generally, a harmless resource of electromagnetic radiation all the time. But since the industrial revolution, we have added a lot of it to our immediate environment. The question is whether this is dangerous.  Firstly it got public attention in a 1979 study link it with leukemia to living with a near power line. This particular study was discredited though. This connection could not be explained and direct cause or a link was confirmed.

But once this has been proposed idea persisted.  A lot of people claim to be sensitive to the radiation coming from our appliances. The report symptoms like headache and nausea, skin reactions, burning eyes, etc.  A few studies have reported much more and settling results like the connection between the side of the brain which people use when they are on phones and the appearance of brain tumors.

The question science is trying to answer is not so much about the acute effect of radiation but we know for example cause any damage to the DNA of the cell but the same doesn't happen increase of radio wave.  The question is whether is this sort of weak electromagnetic radiation we are constantly surrounded by harmful radiation in the long line as a result of which some yet unknown mechanism. Answering this question is much more difficult than we thought.

Many of the much-cited studies spread panic about electromagnetic radiation are highly controversial.  For example, a series of two relations studies are based on surveys and sales reporting.  What this means is, for example, asking brain tumor patients how much they think they used their phone in the last few years. The problem is that people are unreliable to misremember things that all can be influenced easily.

On top of this studies on media reports maybe cherry-picking in finding the best thoughts that make their opinion for making the most exciting headlines.  An example is a study looking for cancer in rate in mice from cell phone radiation the result Seems to show a connection but for some reason only in the male rat and not at all in mice but it was reported as these studies did mobile phone radiation causes Cancer, unfortunately, this is the case of studies both positive and negative findings in the issues.

Another expect is W.H.O. did officially classified radio frequency that is possibly carcinogenic what this means is that there are some hints that they might cause cancer but we can't prove it and then we can keep an eye out. So, if you if we zoom out of it what is the big picture, on the whole, was no consistent evidence in human history that electromagnetic radiation below the exposure value level cause health problem. There are some statistical associations but they are mostly weak and inconsistent if there were any cost-effective relations we would know by now.
