iPhone SE (2020): The evolution of Apple's most affordable smartphone

It was one of Apple's most anticipated devices of late: The small, compact, and relatively affordable iPhone SE was crying out for a makeover since it was launched in 2017, and as rumored, the iPhone SE (2020) has finally arrived.

This model reuses many of the options that we had seen in the iPhone 8 because Apple's proposal here is to propose a more attractive alternative for those who want an iPhone at more adjusted prices. There are sacrifices in various areas, but the appeal of the product is hardly debatable.

Datasheet of the iPhone SE (2020)

The specification sheet of the new iPhone SE reveals a proposal that combines elements of the iPhone 8 with some of the iPhone 11. The chassis is that of the iPhone 8, and that return to the Touch ID sensor to the detriment of Face ID is unique.

It also highlights the 4.7-inch screen that even with the pronounced frames makes the terminal more compact than the rest of iPhones currently available.

The protagonist of the specification sheet is probably the Apple A13 Bionic processor, which allows you to get all the ground out of the other components, including the camera, which is an adaptation of that of the iPhone 11 and which among other things will allow you to record video in resolution 4K and 60 FPS.

Two unique options are also surprising: although the water resistance is lower than that of other models (IP67 vs. IP68), we will have wireless charging support and also WiFi connectivity6, the new standard that extends coverage and transfer rates for this type of transmissions.

Apple has not offered data such as the capacity of its battery, although it does indicate that the autonomy of the iPhone SE is "more or less that of the iPhone 8". It will be interesting to see if that data is fulfilled considering that we are facing a more powerful processor (and efficient, certainly).

The included charger is once again modest and only offers 5W of charging power, although the iPhone SE (2020) supports 18W fast charging. It does not have a headphone jack, but headphones with a Lightning connector are included in the box.

Design: the frames are back, TouchID is back

Apple had leaped phones with hardly any frames after the launch of the iPhone X, and it is curious how this new iPhone SE (2020) is precisely heir to the last "conventional" Apple mobiles that came along with the iPhone X, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.

Like those, in the new iPhone SE, we find those bulky frames that were characteristic of Apple smartphones. That precisely makes the firm recover the Touch ID sensor, which is surely a powerful claim for those who missed this biometric sensor. The mobile lacks Face Id, and we are facing a "modern version" of that iPhone 8 in many sections.

The design does not change much compared to those models: the frames are, as we said, spacious and return us a little to that past of huge Apple phones that still did not have too large screens. In the iPhone SE, we go back to a discrete 4.7-inch diagonal that was an accompaniment to Apple mobiles for years.

The new iPhone SE will be available in three colors: black, white and the characteristic red of its PRODUCT (Red) edition. Although it will integrate many of the options that we saw in the iPhone 8, it will not have support for 3D Touch technology. That could have a noticeably positive impact on the battery. Of course, Apple indicates that it has a haptic response for quick actions and context menus.

We are of course facing a device that will surely be a candidate for those looking for a substitute for their old iPhone 6. The price is striking, especially in the case of an Apple smartphone, and the format follows the same line as that of those models that are They presented in September 2014 and supposed that first jump to 4.7-inch diagonals (and 5.5 in the Plus model) after maintaining 4-inch screens on their smartphones for years.

A camera may still be enough

Another of the obvious sacrifices that come with the new iPhone SE is the one that affects its camera configuration: from the sensor modules that came to the iPhone 11 in all its variants we move to a configuration that is also a return to the past: only We will have a rear camera.
