In the app, this week: Google Play gets new rules,

Welcome back to the apps this week, the latest OS news, the apps they support

The app industry is equally hot, with the consumer industry recording 204 billion downloads and spending $120 billion in 2019. People are using the app now

Google also changes the rules of its app store.

A few weeks ago, Apple Paul amended its app store rules to allow game streaming apps and to clarify, among other things, the in-app purchase rules. Now Google has also updated its rules.

In response to the threat of regulation, Google announced this week that it was updating its Google Play billing policies to make it more clear that in-app purchases would be subject to Google's commission. This will affect some developers who are not currently using Google Play's billing system when selling digital goods in their app.

These rules seem to want to bring skirting excellent services into in-app purchase rules like Netflix and Spotify. Currently, Google says developers can tell users how to sign up outside of the Google Play app and use alternative payments. But whether Google will allow such a link to be placed on the main screen of the app.

EU rules may force Apple and Google to share customer data, ban pre-installed applications.

Large technology companies, including Apple Pal and Google, may be required to share customer data with competitors if the proposed EU rules, the Digital Services Act, are passed. The government is to target competitive business practices among top players in technology like Google, Amazon, and Facebook.

Large technology companies may be barred from offering their services on their websites and platforms. This means that an iPhone without a Google app like Gmail or Drive can have an iPhone without stock apps, offering an Android phone or an iPhone offering key functionality like a camera.

Another clause would ban tech companies from restricting competitors from offering their products to customers outside of the gatekeeper's platform. This may affect the App Store's current rules regarding payments and in-app purchases.

Apple has made small concessions with iOS 14 in anticipation of regulatory pushback. In iOS 14, Apple Moment now lets users choose their preferred web browser and email app. And both this and Google recently offered in their App Store guidelines for greater clarity on the right to deposit platform fees in certain situations.
