Importance of training teachers on oral health maintenance

Oral health care is an essential practice that needs to be carried out on a regular basis, to prevent dental problems. Naturally, it is children who are at higher risk to suffering from these problems such as caries(tooth decay) and various gum problems since their intake of sugary foods is more. But then, they are children, who are the most difficult of people to convince, especially when it is about refraining from their most beloved things.

However, if they are taught about it in their early years of growing up, and by someone with whom they spend great deal of time, it is very likely that they would listen to that person. Whereas the impact would be less if a strange well-wisher would come to teach them the same practices of oral health.

Undoubtedly, a parent or a teacher is the word that comes to the mind. Both play important roles in the lives of children. But, since a teacher is a person who is especially present to educate and take care of children, they could prove to be the most efficient solution for teaching good practices of oral health to the little fellows.

We all have seen in schools, how teachers engage with children to teach them good manners and practices, be it in the class room or on the lunch table. But what has been missing through all these years is teaching on the subject of oral health. Since teachers are themselves not aware of importance of oral heath practices, they often miss to build this habit in the lives of students.

However, if teachers are trained in the same subject, they could impart the same knowledge to their children; teach them importance of flossing, mouth-washing and brushing twice a day, which by the way, should be carried out by us too, as adults. But do you see, most of us don't. Because we were too, never influenced or encouraged to learn these habits and include it as a daily practice in life.

Thus, a teacher's training program on oral health maintenance is highly important to inspire good dental habits amongst school going children.
