Let us first know the difference between skin tone and undertone. skintone is the outer color that can be dark, fair, or dusky. At the same time, undertones are the color that comes from within our skin.

Skin tones can change due to climate, i.e., we get tan or look a little darker in summers; that is our skin tone. Whereas undertones never change. Undertones play a major role in deciding which color will suit me.

 

we have three different types of undertones:

1. Warm undertone
2. Cool undertone
3. Neutral undertone

 

How do we identify our undertones?

There are three easy steps from which we can decide what undertone we have. let's see them one by one:

       1. Have a look at the veins of your wrist carefully. If they appear more greenish, then you may have a warm undertone. If they appear bluish, purplish/pinkish, then you may have a cool undertone 

 

        If it is difficult/confusing for you to decide which color your veins are, you may have a neutral undertone.

 

        2. Take a white blank paper, hold it against your neck and chest region. Look in the mirror or ask someone to tell if your skin gives a yellowish appearance against the white paper; if yes, you may have a warm undertone.

       If your skin is giving a reddish/pinkish appearance then, you may have a cool undertone. Now still, if you are confused, then you might have a neutral undertone.

 

        3. The last way to check your undertone is what type of jewelry enhances your skin. Usually, golden jewelry enhances warm undertones while it makes cool undertones' skin look dull and pale.

       If silver jewelry enhances your skin, then you have a cool undertone, and if, my dear, both types of jewelry suits you, then congrats, you have a neutral undertone.

 

 

       

          Now, as you know about undertones, you can easily select colors according to your undertone. But before proceeding further, let's understand the color wheel.

 

We have three primary colors- red, blue, and yellow.

By mixing them, we get secondary colors, and further mixing of these gives us tertiary colors.

 

 

Now we will divide them into warm and cool colors:

 

 

Let's see what colors are best for warm undertones:

reds, yellows, orange, browns, and more. They can choose any color from the warm side of the color wheel. also, avoid wearing pure whites as it will make your skin look dull; instead, go for off whites. also, avoid wearing icy colors.

always remember, warm means fire, so colors related to fire will suit warm undertones. Now it is not compulsory to always wear yellows and reds. Some people might want to wear maybe blue or pink. In that case, what to do?

 

Dont worry, you can wear colors from the cooler side, but you should choose the warmer version of cool hues.

For cool undertones:

You can choose any color from the cool side of the color wheel. If you want to wear something from the warm side, you can go for cooler versions of warm hues.

Avoid bright red, bright yellow, any bright colors.

 

For neutral undertones:

Luckily you can wear any color from the color wheel, be it cool or warm.

You should avoid colors like magenta and more such oversaturated colors as it will make your personality get lost somewhere in the overpowering colors.
