How to Choose A User Friendly Auto Navigation System?

With so many options on the market when it comes to automatic navigation systems, how do you choose the one that will best suit your needs? This question may seem very simplistic; unfortunately, the answer is not nearly as simple as the question. There are many things to consider when choosing a personal navigation system, not the least of which is the purpose for which you will be using the system.

Many people consider automatic navigation systems for their cars and no other purpose. The truth is that these devices can have many very practical uses in your daily life. If you're someone who spends a lot of time outdoors, you may find that a handheld GPS device with mapping capabilities suits your personality and needs better than a stand-alone type of car navigation system. The reason is that these devices can be used not only for detailed driving but also for off-road travel, geocaching, boating, hiking, cycling and mountain climbing, and many other popular activities. Handheld devices are perfect because they can be easily removed from the vehicle and taken with you. The portability makes them perfect companions for almost any activity you choose to participate in.

Many newer model cars, trucks, and SUVs are equipped with onboard automatic navigation systems. Don't think for a second that you're not paying for these great treats. Chances are you're paying a pretty premium price for these beautiful features and don't even know it. But the worst part is that if you are financing the cost of your car, you are also financing the cost of your navigation system. If at all possible, avoid this situation unless you're particularly enamored with the look of in-dash systems, as they don't offer better coverage than you can find in many stand-alone systems that you can easily install and cost significantly less. The thing to remember about these systems is that they are only good for as long as you are in your car for the most part. You may find some that last that many hours off a power source (if you have a self-installed system, not a factory-installed system), but most don't offer the best features for activities like geocaching or fishing.

Before buying, seriously consider and keep in mind what activities you will be using your device for. Don't buy a device that charges for features you're not likely to use and avoid at all costs an interface that isn't easy to use. Remember, you'll be using it on the go most of the time, and you want a system that won't require concentrated effort to operate. We have enough distractions on the road to deal with without adding a difficult-to-use automatic navigation system.

Automatic navigation systems are great to have when you need them, and even at times when they just come in handy, even if you could survive without them. For me the security of knowing I'll never really get lost again is worth the investment I put into mine, I honestly believe you'll feel the same way about your system once you decide which one is best for you.
