The Games of Thrones season 8 finale has come and gone. Daeneryes Targaryen is dead. Jon snow is banished to the wastes beyond the wall. Sansa is queen in the North ,Arya is traveling into the west , and Bran sits on what left of the Iron Throne. Is this end of our adventures in Westeros and Essos? Will there be a season 9?
In short no . No there will not . In fact , HBO is pretty firmly committed to not continuing Games of Thrones is sequel form . No show following the adventures of Arya stark on her journey of discovery, no sitcom about king Bran and his Small council trying to right Westeros after years of war ... For now. Who knows what HBO will think a decade from now , after the original series has had some time to settle ? And when they get to that point, we have ideas .
But don't worry: there may be no Game of Thrones sequels , but there will be at least one prequel , set thousands of years before the mainline show , before dragons come to Westeros, before the wall was even built . The working title is Bloodmoon , although that may be a placeholder. Like Thrones ,the cast is expansive . This time it includes not but two names : Naomi Watts and Miranda Richardson.
" We were ecstatic to hear that season i would not fact be the end . Even though we were satisfied with the ending to our show. We never felt that we had done justice to the source material. So an additional four episodes and a movies is welcome news. Especially working with George on his universe would guarantee a proper ending " said David benioff.
And while the original show may be over , George R.R.Martin is still writing his song of Ice and Fire novel. The ending will be the same , sure but the path to get there should be quite different.
