The importance of eSports.

More than 370,000 people attended Gamescom last year, and this number is likely to be included in 2019 because games and eSports are really gathering momentum. More and more people are playing. The gaming industry is growing. And eSports will be a multi-billion dollar market this year. Of course, we at Deutsche Telekom are fully aware of this practice. It is therefore important that we develop our skills in this area. In June 2018, we launched a partnership with SK Gaming - one of the oldest and most successful sports teams. We support them with our communication and technology expertise. In partnership with the team, we will be hosting the Magenta Trophy - a major tournament - with Gamescom Saturday. So I would like to take this opportunity to talk about three things I love about sports and eSports.

1. eSports goes from side to side

In 2018, revenue from Sports was $ 865 million. As mentioned above, the segment will exceed the multi-billion dollar mark this year. By 2022, revenue is expected to rise to about $ 1.8 million. According to a recent survey, 65 percent of Germans know about eSports, and this number will increase as eSports becomes more eligible. This has been the case in Asia for several years. Professional play is also a game in the Asia Games. It is also known as a game in other European countries such as France and the Netherlands. However, we have not yet reached this point in Germany.

Earlier this year, SK Gaming's Managing Director, Alexander Müller, made an interesting presentation on the trend of this category during our Telekom Management Team team meeting. During the meeting, he pointed out that eSports surpasses more established games in media for young people. Today, children aged 18-25 watch more eSports online than regular sports. And not only that: There is even an eSports channel in German-speaking countries (also available on Magenta TV, of course, 😊). Tickets for major popular events are on sale for a few hours. Example: There is only one event in the history of the LAXNESS Arena in Cologne that sold faster than the two eSports tournaments in 2015 and 2016: the Metallica concert.

At Deutsche Telekom, we want to be closer to a group aimed at young people. To make them happy with our products. However, to do that, we need to be visible. We believe that eSports is a great opportunity for us to achieve this. And with SK Gaming, we have the right partner.

2. Gambling and eSports are in line with our values

In his speech, Alexander Müller said something that stuck with me: "eSports is something young people have made for themselves." Young people meet. They have shared entertainment, shared love. Because, after all, 'Life is about sharing.' Most Gamescom visitors are young people. In 'You and Me,' our internal social network at Deutsche Telekom, there is the 'Gaming @ Telekom' group. More than 1 500 Deutsche Telekom employees are already members of the group. They chat and talk about eSports and general sports topics. And they both demolished boundaries.

I strongly believe that most games are characterized by everyone being the same when they enter the stadium. It's like playing. Anyone can join. Anyone can participate in a sports competition. The origin of man? It doesn't matter. Gender? It doesn't matter. Physical appearance? It doesn't matter. Physical disabilities are also irrelevant. So everyone can get involved, everyone can #TAKE. And that is exactly what we stand for.

It is not possible to read Alt-Text for these images. Of course, fresh air and sports are irreversible. It is important that children and young people continue to be outdoors, enjoy working, and have fun. However, I don’t think sports and sports go hand in hand. In fact, that’s exactly the opposite: Maybe the console player console finds a football strategy they can use in real life - or vice versa. As some parents would say, I don’t believe the time before the monitor is wasted. Gambling is inclusive and teaches players to react faster, make decisions, and focus longer.

3. We use our energy in sports and eSports

E athletes need shallow latency times. Every millisecond can be the difference between winning and losing. And that's where we come in. We want to provide our partners and customers with the best possible conditions. Each year, we invest more than 12 billion euros in our global network infrastructure. In the future, eSports tournaments will be hosted on the 5G network. The latencies will be maintained thanks to a small cloud compression and 5G. Besides, the quality of the network is subject to fluctuations, and e players will benefit greatly from this. There is no denying that we want to participate in this.

But we don’t just focus on the former players; we also have our eye on regular athletes. We have already shown this with StreamOn Gaming. On Monday, we will once again announce the beta category of another product intended for gamers.
Thank you.
