• In 1989, the international ban on the trade of ivory was passed. The elephant population was a million in Africa. 7.5 % were getting poached to death every year. To make themselves less appealing to their greatest enemies, elephants all over the world have begun selecting against having tusks at all. By 2005, tusk-less population had risen to between 5-10 % in Asia and Africa. Tusks are wepons and tools, needed to dig for water and roots and to battle for the love of a lady. Nature decided poachers are a greater threat to the elephants than its search for food and breeding.
