European Super League: Why billions of fans around the world unhappy

The controversy over the proposed European Super League has escalated to the point that fans, former players, and even heads of government such as British Prime Minister Boris Johnson or French President Emmanuel Macron are joining it.Most of those who have been vocal so far are opposed to the plan.

But there are billions of fans around the world that the 12 best clubs will regularly fight against each other - the very idea that is causing excitement among many, especially those outside of Europe.

The proposal of the European Super League, known as ESL, says that there will be 12 permanent clubs in this new tournament. These are: Arsenal in England, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham, Atletico Madrid in Spain, Barcelona and Real Madrid, and AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus in Italy.

What is this the European Super League

Just like the UEFA Champions League is played with the top 32 clubs in Europe, the idea of launching the European Super League (ESL) with the top 20 teams in Europe is going on. However, there will be differences in the type or "format" of the game. In the Champions League (UCL) there are 8 groups of 4 teams in each group, where each team plays each other at home-away, and the top 2 teams from each group qualify for the Round of Sixteen, the last 16.

The rest of the matches are then played in a knock-out manner, the semi-finals are played at home-away rules and the finals are played at a neutral venue. The European Super League will be played entirely in the "League" format. A league of 20 teams will be formed where each team will play with the remaining 19 teams in a home-away format. The total number of matches for each team will be 36, and the team that finishes at number 1 will probably be declared the champion (there is uncertainty as to whether the final knockout will be played). The European Super League (ESL) will be played in much the same way as the Premier League, LaLiga. American Bank JP Morgan has so far offered to invest five billion US dollars (about Rs 3645 crore in Indian currency) for the project.

When did European Super League start?

The news so far is that the European Super League is scheduled to start from next August. The matches of the tournament are scheduled to take place in the middle of the week. It is reported that attempts are being made to make the league 20 teams. 15 clubs can be established members of ESL. Where ten teams in each division will play football in home and away format. Like in the Champions League, the final match of the tournament will be played at a neutral ground at the end of the knockout stage.

Why this initiative Europe's biggest football clubs reportedly started taking the initiative a year ago. The idea of setting up a parallel football tournament in the Champions League is being considered to make up for the financial losses that clubs have incurred by hosting league matches on empty fields in extreme cases. It has been claimed that ESL will earn a lot more money than the Champions League. It has been claimed that footballers will also benefit. Earlier, European clubs announced combined spending of 3.5 billion euros on football infrastructure development and the fight against extreme conditions.

What is FIFA saying

FIFA has sent a strong message to European Super League clubs. According to Gianni Infantino, president of the organization, if you want to stay, you have to stay completely, if not. The FIFA chief thinks that there is no point in surviving on two boats. He believes that ESL will destroy the football culture of the world. He also thinks that the negative consequences will be far-reaching among football lovers and footballers.
