Hindi cinema has had high hopes from Bejoy Nambiar ever since he was chosen as the winner of Sony Pix Gateway of Hollywood. Bejoy has given entertaining films to Hindi cinema like 'Wazir', 'Karwaan' and 'Taish'. People also liked his web series 'The Fame Game' very much. But with his previous web series 'Kaala', he has given complete freedom to his cinematic skills to use the grammar of cinema. His new film 'Dange' ('Por' in Tamil) also seems to be a hallmark of his cinematic skills in which he is seen less in storytelling and more in showcasing his cinematic proficiency and cinematic grammar.

The story is somewhat similar to what the Hindi cinema audience has seen in films like 'Haasil' and 'Gulaal'. Gulzar had also made a similar film 'Mere Apne' a long time ago. The DNA of these stories is the unbridled youth of the campus students and anger seems to be their weakness and hollows them out. Student politics in the country is no longer like it used to be in colleges and universities and it has probably been a long time since Bejoy Nambiar has seen a real campus. The story of his film 'Dange' is also the story of the clash of ego, strength and virility of two strong students, the only problem here is that both the heroes of the film do not appear to be students from any point of view. Both of them look so old that at first glance the audience does not see any connection between them and the story of the film.

The problem of the film 'Dange' is that most of the time of the film is spent in creating the background of the characters of the story. This film of campus politics reaches the classroom so late that by then the audience assumes that Bejoy Nambiar has probably forgotten the background in which he has created the story of his film, in order to showcase his directorial abilities. He is busy creating images of heroines' lovemaking. He seems to be busy crafting his skills through the reflections created on the floor. And, in all this confusion, the story which could have been like a love triangle, falls apart even before it can be completed.

The characters of both Harshvardhan Rane and Ehan Bhatt seem stuck in their respective grooves. Both of them do not appear to be college students from anywhere. Neither did research nor studied. What about the rest of the students, they just needed an excuse to create a ruckus. There is also a Rishika in this story of Ji and Yuva. Drug trade also goes hand in hand. Actress TJ Bhanu, who has shown the audience hopes for the future with her glimpses in the film 'Afvaah' and the series 'Guns and Roses', is also there. Her character Gayatri runs an NGO. They are seen fighting 'battles' for the interests of the students. And, at the opposite pole of this pole exists Siddhi. Both of them have an old dispute and also a new fight.

Bejoy Nambiar's direction and the background music of the film are so 'loud' that the film does not stop at one or two real issues emerging amidst all this confusion. Bejoy quickly sees his film becoming a laboratory where he wants to conduct all the experiments in filmmaking. The actors quickly see that the film should end somehow and move on to further work. Student politics seems like a foreign subject to Bejoy, his intentions are good, but if he had ever seen something like this closely, then the cinematic language of the film would definitely have been different.

There is nothing new in this story of old students. It's a worn out story. It's a weak running script. The dialogues neither seem to be from Goa nor from Mumbai. The actors all look tired. There is no freshness visible anywhere in the entire film. Don't know about Harshvardhan and Nikita, but if Ehan, Zoya and TJ Bhanu do one or two more films like this, then their future may definitely seem to be troubling them. The songs and music of the film are very weak. The cinematography starts stinging at some places. The editing is the worst aspect of the film. Even if you only like noise and action, this film is completely capable of boring you.
