Crew 2024 Movie Review

Why should men monopolize all the excitement in the skies? Director Rajesh Krishnan's heist comedy, "Crew," flips the script by showcasing Tabu, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Kriti Sanon as bold, dynamic protagonists who bring a breath of fresh air to the screen. They're spirited, courageous when it counts, and above all, immensely entertaining. And while the plot may take some wild and unexpected turns, that's part of "Crew's" charm—it remains a hilarious and invigorating viewing experience.

Geeta Sethi (Tabu), Jasmine Bajwa (Kareena), and Divya Rana (Kriti) are air hostesses at Kohinoor Airlines, a nod to the now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines. Each woman harbors aspirations for a better life. Geeta, a former Miss Karnal, resides with her husband Arun Sethi (Kapil Sharma), who dreams of opening a restaurant in Goa. Meanwhile, they also support Geeta's brother and his wife, who struggle with alcoholism.

Jasmine, fixated on luxury brands from Beemer to Louis Vuitton, isn't opposed to curating a glamorous facade on social media. Raised in Jabalpur by her grandfather (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), she values the importance of genuine connections. Meanwhile, Divya, a high-achiever in school, is adored by her family but struggles with the guilt of misleading them about her career aspirations. While she yearns for the thrill of becoming a pilot, she finds herself caught in a scandal as an air hostess. Adding to the excitement is her entanglement with customs officer Jaiveer (Diljit Dosajh), whose attempts at romance lead him on an unexpected journey.

Struggling with six months of unpaid wages, the trio continues their duties with dwindling enthusiasm, finding solace in their daily expenses during international flights. However, their lives take a tumultuous turn when they become embroiled in a smuggling probe. Upon discovering that Kohinoor Airlines' chairman, Vijay Walia (Saswata Chatterjee), mirroring Vijay Mallya, has absconded to Al Burj (essentially Dubai), they resolve to reclaim their owed wages and more from him, no holds barred.

Their concoction of wild schemes to exact their revenge while evading the clutches of investigating authorities and customs officials creates a rollercoaster of thrills and spills, making for an exhilarating and unpredictable journey.

Although the storyline holds promise for a unique heist comedy, the messy screenplay and nonlinear narrative occasionally introduce inconsistencies. Despite this, writers Nidhi Mehra and Mehul Suri deliver witty one-liners and comedic punches, many of which induce genuine laughter, although a few jokes miss the mark. I particularly enjoy Bebo's Jasmine frequently bursting into "Sona Kitna Sona Hai."

Despite finding themselves in the most precarious situations, laughter and humor persistently accompany us throughout. Serious moments and emotionally charged scenes are notably absent, leaving little room for anything but lightheartedness. However, "Crew" could have certainly achieved a smoother landing. While the first half takes off smoothly and soars with a backward-moving story at a steady pace, the second half falters in the writing department. Many scenes feel rushed, as if hastily wrapping up the film within a constrained timeframe.

The heart of "Crew" lies in the camaraderie among the trio, their strong female friendships, and the rollercoaster of emotional (and hilarious) experiences they navigate in the face of adversity. At times, the narrative veers into sitcom territory, with some conveniently timed occurrences and coincidences that may raise eyebrows and question the characters' intelligence. Nonetheless, it remains an enjoyable watch. However, the abundance of blatant brand integrations, such as Wow Momo, AJIO, Zomato, and LV, is hard to ignore. And the unnecessary inclusion of Arab dancers in "Choli Ke Peeche" detracts from the classic's vibe, although watching Bebo dance to it is still a delight.

Despite the ups and downs, the ladies shine brilliantly from beginning to end. Their energy remains unwavering throughout the journey. Tabu, the most seasoned among them both on and off-screen, delights with her knack for delivering jokes with a deadpan expression. Her sharp one-liners and local slang contribute to the amusement. Kareena effortlessly steals the spotlight as the undisputed queen. There are echoes of Geet and Poo in her portrayal, whether it's her stunning appearance or the infectious fun she brings to her character.

It's important to highlight Kriti's commendable performance, holding her own alongside two seasoned actors and bringing an undeniable charm to the ensemble. Additionally, while the male characters may come and go as required, both Kapil and Diljit skillfully leverage their strengths to leave a lasting impression. The director's subtle approach to their roles allows them to make a significant impact within the narrative.

In summary, "Crew" delivers laughs and entertainment with its blend of cheesy and confident humor, managing to stay engaging despite encountering some turbulence along the way. The trio's dynamic performances keep the film afloat, leaving audiences wishing for more of their antics.
