Before society can achieve anything which gives full safeguard to the billions of people occupying the planet, we have to strive for peace and justice for all. We want no threats to dominate our thoughts, and no earthly power which prevents others from achieving their goal. Every step should be a joint step, to create a better world.
Ours had been the most violent century, and we must now seriously work towards the end of the twentieth century to provide our children a world which gives them security and establish better norms to deal with the situation. We must promote peace, tolerance and respect in our educational centers, and human rights should be a subject at all levels of education. If we can introduce human rights as a subject, we will soon see that peace and love make our new society, which responds to the needs of anxiety ridden mankind. The new kind of thinking, demands a reassessment of certain stereotypes, which have struck deep roots.
We in Pakistan are proud that this great conference of writers is talking place in our country, it is the firt conference of it's type, and all of us attending it must see that we all work together to bring about the United world.
In countries which are underdeveloped like ours,let the writers indifferent to the umpteen problems facing us and be a part of improvement in our condition at every level. In underdeveloped countries, there is always a crisis of some sort-for poverty, famines and floods play havoc with our lives.If our writers project the real problems of the people and if we are honest, we can introduce the truth about why there is illiteracy, backwardness, poverty and lack of justice, and the fact that these are solvable problems if we have the right priorities and if we opt for peace and co-existence and exclude expenditure on arms from our budgets. It is the job of writers to expose the hidden demons which are destroying our lives.
Let us promise to dismantle all that Zia erected to defend his power. Let there be an end to ethnic conflict, let there be an end to internal strife between religious sects, let us live like human beings who want their country to move forward towards progress and who can better advocate these ideas than our writers, and who can be better placed to bring about peace than the women. Let us unite to achieve understanding amongst people with different voices and different cultures; let us not allow anything to come between achieving friendship with all people of the world. Let us strive for good neighborly relations with all our neighbors; let us talk of peace and wipe hatred off our minds and our books.
