Code 8 Part 2 Movie Review

On Wednesday, February 28th, 'Code 8: Part II' on Netflix revisits the fictional world of Lincoln City, where individuals with superpowers face oppression from corrupt law enforcement and a society that often views them with distrust or hostility.

The 2019 debut film, initially crowdfunded after gaining traction from an impressive short film, paved the way for 'Code 8: Part II.' While the sequel benefits from increased financial support from Netflix, it maintains a tighter focus despite feeling somewhat scaled down. Nevertheless, it grapples with lingering issues carried over from the original narrative.

The litmus test for the new movie lies in its ability to stand alone, independent of its predecessor. While it's advisable to watch the original for context (despite its recycled elements reminiscent of 'Blade Runner', 'RoboCop', and 'X-Men'), 'Part II' manages to carve out its own identity. It presents a narrative that, while not entirely separate from the first, remains engaging without requiring constant reference to character histories or Wikipedia pages.

The condensed opening exposition, reminiscent of the first film's, offers a brief recap of previous events while shedding light on why viewers should invest in Robbie Amell's gritty portrayal of Connor.

Co-written and directed by Jeff Chan, along with co-writer Chris Pare and newcomers Sherren Lee and Jesse LaVercombe, 'Part II' grapples with a few narrative hiccups. At times, it feels like a repetition of the first installment, with Robbie Amell's Connor once again navigating the complexities of someone with powers aiding him – this time, Sirena Gulamgaus' Pav, whose abilities serve as a convenient plot device. On the other hand, Stephen Amell's Garrett has ascended, establishing his own drug empire in Lincoln City following the demise of his superiors from the previous film.

Despite the familiar narrative elements, the world's evolution in 'Part II' adds depth and impact. While the police claim to employ less aggressive tactics with robotic police dogs, corruption among the officers has surged, intensifying the societal unrest.

In terms of direction, Chan excels in making a low-budget sci-fi production visually appealing while preserving the essence of the original film. However, pacing issues persist from 'Code 8', with action sequences lacking the desired swiftness and occasional lags throughout the narrative.

Robbie Amell delivers a consistent performance as Connor, although his role primarily involves scowling and exerting effort while the VFX team brings his electricity powers to life on screen. While he may not showcase the versatility of his cousin (more on him later), he capably embodies the character of Connor.

Stephen Amell's portrayal of Garrett as more of a villain adds an enjoyable dynamic to the film, showcasing depth in his character. Despite having slightly less screen time compared to the previous installment where he was a central focus, 'Part II' still provides ample opportunity for him to deliver a solid performance.

Sirena Gulamgaus skillfully navigates the role of young Pav, striking a balance between being engaging without veering into precocious or irritating territory. While Pav occasionally serves more as a plot device than a fully fleshed-out character, Gulamgaus effectively brings her to life on screen.

Beyond the central trio, 'Kim's Convenience' veteran Jean Yoon injects energy into her role as the organizer of a dilapidated local community center. Additionally, Aaron Abrams makes a welcome return as police detective Davis from the first film, contributing to the investigation of corrupt superiors in his own capacity.
