While the sequel benefits from increased financial support from Netflix, it maintains a tighter focus despite feeling somewhat scaled down. Nevertheless, it grapples with lingering issues carried over from the original narrative.
The litmus test for the new movie lies in its ability to stand alone, independent of its predecessor. While it's advisable to watch the original for context (despite its recycled elements reminiscent of 'Blade Runner', 'RoboCop', and 'X-Men'), 'Part II' manages to carve out its own identity. Robbie Amell delivers a consistent performance as Connor, although his role primarily involves scowling and exerting effort while the VFX team brings his electricity powers to life on screen. While he may not showcase the versatility of his cousin (more on him later), he capably embodies the character of Connor.
Stephen Amell's portrayal of Garrett as more of a villain adds an enjoyable dynamic to the film, showcasing depth in his character. Despite having slightly less screen time compared to the previous installment where he was a central focus, 'Part II' still provides ample opportunity for him to deliver a solid performance.
Sirena Gulamgaus skillfully navigates the role of young Pav, striking a balance between being engaging without veering into precocious or irritating territory. While Pav occasionally serves more as a plot device than a fully fleshed-out character, Gulamgaus effectively brings her to life on screen.
Beyond the central trio, 'Kim's Convenience' veteran Jean Yoon injects energy into her role as the organizer of a dilapidated local community center.
