Coca-Cola is world's largest plastic polluter for second year straight

Coca-Cola was once again named the world's largest plastic polluter.

For the second year in a row, the nonprofit Break Free From Plastic tagged the Altanta-based Coke as the biggest producer of plastic waste.

The enviroment group had 75,541 volunteers in 51 countires collect plastics waste in september, and 43 percent ofmwhat they found were clearly marked consumer brands, the guardians reported.Coca-Cola was the number one, with almost 12,000 Coca-Cola products found in 37 countries across the world.

Nestle' and Pepsico followed

While Coke was the top source in Africa and Europe, in the US, Nestle was the biggest producer of plastics polluction. Solo Cup Company and Starbucks were Nos.2 and 3.

"Any time our packaging ends up in our oceans or anywhere that it doesn't belong is unacceptable to us,"Coca-Cola said in a statement to the Intercept." In paternership with others, we are working to address this critical global issue, both to help turn off the tap in term of plastic waste entering our oceans and to help clean up the existing pollution.

PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, Procter and Gamble, Danone , Unilever, and Dow are committed to funding the 90 million investment and Circulate Capital says a deal will be inked by 2019. The firms says they are also working on ways for medium and small companies to invest.

"While we are working hard to ensure our packaging is designed to be circular, the reality is that it cannot be reused, recyled or composted without effective waste management systems in place,"said Danone's Katharina Stenholm in a press release. she was referring to the concept of a circular economy, in which any waste materials in an industry, such as packaging, are reincorporated into new products.

"There's no silver bullet to stop plastic pollution,"says Kalpan."We're not going to be able to recycle our ways out of the problem, and we're not going to be to reduce our way out of the problem."
