Can We Really Defend Ourselves From An Asteroid Armageddon?

Asteroids are space rocks of varying sizes that orbit the Sun found in the Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter that are remnants of an older period of cosmos.

Many of these space rocks have ‘gravitated’ (pun intended) towards Earth lately and it is actually not a rare phenomenon. Many asteroids along their everlasting trip around the Sun tend to cross paths with orbits of planets that orbit the Sun in arranged elliptical orbitsSEE ALSO: Oxford Scientist Decodes Alien Life, Asteroid Collision, Life On Mars And More

A collision by one of these asteroids has been speculated by scientists on numerous occasions describing the massive devastation their theoretical impact would cause. Stephen Hawking in his book ‘Brief Answers to the Big Questions’ talked about an asteroid collision being a threat to Earth. More recently Neil DeGrasse Tyson talked about the devastating tsunami that will be caused by asteroid 99942 Apophis. But are these are just theories? Or do they really point towards the major danger that asteroids carry with them?

Talking about the Apophis ‘God of chaos’ story, Oxford scientist, Lewis Dartnell told Mashable India that, "Asteroid Apophis is one of the asteroids that we are tracking and we know that it is not going to impact for the next few decades and will continue on trail”. He also explained that astronomers are actively looking for asteroids that might pose a threat but until now no such asteroid posing grave danger has been found.

However, when it comes to the overall danger surrounding asteroid collision on Earth, Neil De Grasse stated in a tweet that "society’s refusal to heed the warnings of scientists" is the real threat.
