Review and synopsis of the first season of Avatar: The Last Airbender

However, Avatar: The Last Airbender is not your typical animated series; in fact, it's one of the most well liked and well known animated shows ever produced. It shares a pedigree with One Piece, which Netflix unexpectedly succeeded in adapting just a few months ago. It's a fantastical adventure that rivals any of your favorite films in terms of scope, intensity, and humanity, which makes a live action remake more dangerous than normal but also more worthwhile.

The four elements of earth, air, fire, and water constitute the world of Avatar, and it is around these elements that kingdoms have grown and conflicts have been fought. Although the kingdoms are rivalrous, they are kept in a state of uneasy peace by the Avatar, a semi celestial hero figure who can control all four elements at once. Warriors of each element may manipulate it through a technique known as "bending."

This status quo is upset at the beginning of Season 1 when the evil Fire Nation engages in a bloody conquest prior to the appearance of the most recent Avatar, whose spirit is eventually reincarnated in a different candidate after the previous one passes away. They destroy the Airbenders, from whose ranks the new Avatar will be selected. All that remains is 12 year old Aang (Gordon Cormier), a legendary bender who spends a century enshrouded in a glacier.

By the time Aang defrosts, the kingdoms have all turned insular and paranoid, and the Fire Nation has taken over most of the planet. Together with his sky bison Appa, 14 year old Waterbender Katara (Kiawentiio), her elder brother Sokka (Ian Ousley), and other allies, Aang sets out to fulfill his training, live up to the title of Avatar, and free the world from tyrannical fire.

If any of this seems familiar, it's because the general plot of every fantasy hero's journey ever undertaken is included in these lines. But don't worry about that, since Avatar is a really unique take on the genre, with lots of interesting concepts, compelling characters, action packed scenes, and an unexpectedly complex universe rich in mythology, politics, and history.

You could be forgiven for not noticing this, though, as the Netflix show's opening episode is a complete disaster, heavy on exposition and VFX that looks ropey, and it moves so quickly that it presents the people and the setting in a really confusing way. Unquestionably, some of these problems continue in all eight episodes, but not to the same degree. Avatar: The Last Airbender is a far stronger program than first impressions indicate after it settles in.

The youthful characters become entangled in one adventure after another and discover a great deal about themselves through a variety of fascinating settings, including a frozen Arctic, a city constructed into a mountain, and a destroyed forest full with ghosts. The main bunch is pleasantly fleshed out as things progress, and the youthful cast is flawed but always willing to participate. Even so called baddies like his wise general uncle Iroh (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) and his daddy issueso ridden Fire Nation prince Zuko (Dallas Liu) get plenty of screen time. The majority of people in this group are worthy of your time, and as we get to know them more, we find more and more dimensions to their personalities.

Meanwhile, expertly staged action scenes maintain a high level of suspense, and elemental bending gives the fight scenes a somewhat distinct touch while also providing an excuse for a variety of creative concepts. Although certain parts of the show don't always look fantastic or even finished, the bending is always amazing to watch.
